What's your thoughts on the Franklin Apple? They've got a big marketing push on it at Stark Bros and Cummins now. My my take is I've got two trees. One unknown old and one grown from seed that seem to match that description except I haven't had the apples tested for cider and won't. Art, I sent you some scions from the older one last year. I will have some from the younger one this year. They won't be GRIN size but, if anyone wants some of either let me know. I'll check things out more tomorrow. This is is the younger one in April last year. Still holding a few yellow with red striped apples. It snowed after that photo and killed most of the buds so only had 3-4 apples last fall. Here's the old tree in November 2014. This was a bad year and it still had quite a few that hung into February. I took some photos a couple weeks ago but, can't find them.

I don't know enough about cider making to have a real opinion. It does seem that there's some "marketing" going on. That apple may indeed be the next best thing for apple cider, I have no idea.

Well let's see if Appleman showsup on the deerhunter forum. I was waiting for that too, hasn't happened yet. Maya had been largely absent from H-T until recently. He had posted a lot more on DHF. I'm probably just too paranoid

Would that be what I called NH Gold of NH Red?

Yes Art. NH Gold is the bigger tree.

This is the tree that grew from seed most likely started in 2009. The older parent tree that I call NH Gold is in the background with several apples still holding. Here is the larger tree NH Gold. I've got to get a ladder up there and prune next month. The apples look red now but, they a gold color until they freeze up. Lots of deer tracks under this tree.

I checked my NH Gold and have about 8 inches of growth. I hope it survives the winter. I put it on Ranetka.

Art,
Do you have all of your apples in an orchard or spread out in groups??

Some apples near the house get better care. Others get a little care. and some are just left to do their own thing.
Carl-some of the groups have been linked together by more apples.

What I like about the Franklin apple is that people always asks what happens if you grow apple trees from seeds. The standard answer is you could have crap or maybe something good.
It renforces that once in awhile something really good can happen.

Am I correct in saying, the only way to get these is to buy 50 from Starks? Sounds interesting, I have plenty of room still but don't need 50. I'd take 10-15. Anyone interested in splitting.

I think they'll be available retail next year, but for this year the only way to get any is to order 50 from Starks wholesale
