Art what about IL and how the disease has continued to spread despite culling? There was a study on this showing deer that were left over disperse and look for new family groups.

Art what about IL and how the disease has continued to spread despite culling? There was a study on this showing deer that were left over disperse and look for new family groups. I have read a bit about that, perhaps through things you have posted. Limiting or decreasing dispersal distances would be important. How to do it is a good question. The disease will spread, no matter what we do in cases where it is well established. In my view slowing the spread and keeping the infection rate low are the keys for what we know now. I suspect high deer numbers lead to more contact, more contaminated ground, and more disease. Once again, I ain't the expert. However the principles should be very similar to diseases of pastured cattle that are spread through animal to animal contact and via the soil.

You guys in N MN have seen first hand what low deer numbers do to the hunting tradition as well as economy. Culling deer to try and fight CWD will have much more of an impact on hunting tradition than CWD ever will. I agree with Stu that funds should be directed towards ensuring everyone who wants to test their deer can. Many believe fighting CWD is a matter of genetic resistance as it has worked in scrapie infected sheep. I'm not a supporter of deer farms, but they certainly facilitate studying/monitoring CWD infected herds.

^^^I hate to say it, but I think finding deer hunters who are against the DNR's CWD response plan outside SE MN may be difficult.
There appears to be some resentment of hunters in that little corner of the state. Probably due to the fact you have (had?) a lot more deer than most everywhere else in the state...thanks to Blufflands/MWA advocating for better hunting. You also have APRs, something that a lot of people outside SE MN covet.
So...there's jealousy and resentment towards that little chunk of the state.

Some thing I have not read about, maybe I missed it. Why has Minnesota not done random testing for CWD in every county? CWD may be more wide spread than what every one thinks in Minnesota. For several years after initial CWD discovery Wisconsin did random testing in every county to get a handle on where it existed. Now unless some one suspects a deer has CWD the only testing is done at deer farms or around where a new positive CWD has been discovered.

Testing had been done in select areas, but not on a county basis. My area had testing about 10 years ago.
