Sunscalud or winter burn or whatever term you prefer.

Thanks Art. I'd think that too but, this tree was fine until mid to late June. Then it started splitting. We've had a lot of rain so I'm not sure if that caused it or not.

It may just be normal. At some point, apple trees go from the smooth bark of a young tree to the rougher bark of a mature tree.

Do insects cause any of this? I get this crap all the time on my trees. I finally painted most of mine this year so I'm hoping it will stem the tide a bit. I'll try and repaint each year, but I've got some rough looking splits on some trees and I think one of my older Freedom is going to be toast because of this.

I'm not sure on insects. I know cicadas will burrow into young wood and cause splits but, we don't have them. I'll paint it white this fall and cross my fingers. I figure it would produce some apples next year if it didn't have this problem.

Cicadas do leave similar looking wounds, but those don't look quite "right" to me.

I've looked through hundres of pics and can't find any that I specifically took of bark splitting. I'll be at our place thursday so I'll try and remember to get a few and post them before we head out to Colorado friday morning.

How old is that/those tree(s) badger? I do not see insect damage there, like NH's trees I'd call that either sunscald/winter damage or a tree naturally developing the rougher bark of an older tree.
FWIW...I've had sunscald on older trees farther up into trees than I can reach.
