On my way back. Fun hunt with lots of animals. We hunted everything spot and stalk and had some close opportunities on decent bucks at 60-70 yds. I shot a doe at 55 yds and put the arrow right right in the armpit but apparently it was an inch or two lower than her heart. We watched her bed down for an hour until dark and could easily see a blood spot. We came back in the morning and she was not there and there was very little blood. She seemed fine as she was eating grass while bedded. If it was a whitetail it would have been a low heart shot but antelope must have different anatomy, I must have hit more brisket than anything vital. Sucks that we didn't get her but I will still head back with rifle. We also had a blast shooting prairie dogs and my furthest kill was 300 yds. with 25-06.

ITs amazing how wide open that country is.
25-06 is a great round and you can reach out and touch animals with them.
Did you buy a new Mountain Rifle, I seem to remember you upgrading out of an FN?

What kind of snake was that?

25-06 is a spendy prairie dog round. And I was confused about whether that was a snake or a huge dump someone took.

I haven't updated my elk rifle yet and we shot the 25-06 on dogs for prep on antelope. As far as the snake goes, I have no idea. All I know is it scared the shit out of me when I almost stepped on it. I was amazed that we were able to get within 70yds of goats in the open country.

My bear stand is set for this Friday morning for my nephew. We will bait the site 1/2 hour before sunrise and I'll let him stay and hunt. I want him to score his first kill. He's got Friday through Sunday to get it done. I've told him not to be too picky. I'll hunt my orchard or clover plots on Saturday and Sunday. Another guy will be in the oaks. If the nephew scores we will sit on the site until all 3 of us have tagged out.

We put out our bait site posted sign at 630am and had the bait barrel setup by 700am. I had to go to my niece's house to do sone remote work. The nephew decided to wait until this afternoon to sit. He's taking a nap now while I'm working. I could use one myself.
I dragged a rag soaked in liquid smoke from 3 directions into the site. That stuff is smelly. There's around 100 pounds of popcorn, sunflower seeds, and other concoctions my nephew made up. No chocolate is allowed in NH baits. I'm waiting on my final release from work time. I may be out by 130pm.

Update I saw a 80 pound bear cross the road when I was headed to camp. The nephew is sitting at The bait site. Nothing hit the site yet. I'm in my orchard. The wind had picked up. I see about 5-6 trees that need to be cleared for shooting and I didn't bring my hand saw. Lol There's a ton of apples hanging in here. The pruning work in February has paid off.

You got any concerns about too much natural food distracting their attention away from your bait?
