Thanks for the info... I just did this on my OTC farm. It will lower my taxes overall as well.

To be honest I never like gov't giveaways. No matter what it is. Somewhere else down the line we're paying for this program. I'd rather see every gov't program go away and start over with little to no taxes and the freedom to do whatever I want with my land (which I already do but with high mn taxes).

Hell....I figured most of you MN guys would just as soon drink gasoline and piss on a brush fire rather than cooperate with your DNR based on some of the things that seem to be going on there.

I paid for my 2c plan out of my own pocket (used a private forester, not a DNR employee). Around $600 as I recall. Not a big amount when talking about owning property. I guess the fact I receive a tax break now makes me a habitat welfare recipient too though

I had a private consultant do my plan and I received state welfare for it's cost. There was a program for lands within the watershed of lakes with Cisco in them.

I understand the anti govt sentiment. However, without some of the programs there is no way we would have been able to do some of the things we have done.
Hate me if you want for being a welfare recipient, but I dont have the finances to do the things others are able to do out of their pockets.

I don't hate guys for being on the take. I hate that we've gotten so far with all the programs and higher taxes that we have to be on the take to own and use the land. If we look at our WI neighbors all you hear about is all the tree/ land programs they have to put their land into just so they can pay the taxes on it. That to me is big gov't taking too much control over private properties. Make the taxes so high private property has to be in a gov't controlled program. Seems we've lost our way in this great country and traded our freedoms for the security of a gov't bureaucracy.

With government being involved, it seems like costs are so much higher as paperwork mounts and mounts. Then you need to hire, train , and oversee new help to do the paperwork. Qualified and trained people are often not hired, but inexperienced people need the guidance at the job. Paperwork... I am currently working on some cattle going to Canada and it is a nightmare.

Just to clarify, I did use a private forester. He filled out the paperwork and a month later I got $300 in the mail. I had contacted him about prices and plans before the $$ was available. I am sure there are some foresters out there increasing their prices accordingly.
I think it would be better if they didn't have these programs, but hard not to take advantage of "free" money. If these programs were needed to afford the land it would not be good. But a large portions of people out there buying houses (FHA, USDA RD, VA) or land (Farm Credit) are getting gov't backed loans. The issues of big gov't run much deeper.
In related news, SFIA is being expanded with 20 and 50 year options. It sounds like the payments will be 11.50/acre and 15/acre. Taxes on bare land in near me run 10-14/acre. A person could cover 100% or more of their taxes. I imagine there are other places in northern MN away from agriculture and the big money lake areas that are similar.
