Might a thread on which varieties have been problematic for us be helpful for others? I don't know, but here's the thread Black Gilliflower - mine is a 2nd year graft and is just sitting there. Next to nothing for growth and it seems to be impacted by scab big time. I'll be cutting it off next spring and grafting the rootstock to something else. Granite Beauty - pretty much the same story ^^^. CAR seems to have impacted it more than scab, but I think it's just a disease magnet. 2nd leaf tree. I will be re-grafting to something else. Kinder Krisp - totally torn up by CAR and not growing at all. 2nd leaf tree. Re-grafting to something else. Esopus Spitzenberg - I knew this tree was a disease magnet when I planted it, but I wanted to try one. It has done much better than the above ^^^ varieties, but it still is far from growing vigorously. I'm still trying to decide what to do with this one long term. 3rd leaf tree Ashmead's Kernel - this variety just isn't growing well for me. I think it's impacted by scab a bit, but am not 100% sure. I'm going to let it grow for at least another year, but it may be destined for re-grafting at some point in the future. 3rd leaf tree Anybody else with inputs...please chime in

Last year, Frostbite looked like a disease magnet. Maybe a bit better this year. Why does it change?

Stu,
If it were me I'd give them a third year. They may be weak and are setting their roots. Established trees will handle the diseases better. After next year then see what happens.

Sunscald-like splits all over the entire tree. CAR susceptible. Scab susceptible. Very slow grow.

Fireside - CAR & Scab susceptible. I sprayed 3 times this year and they flourished. But I do not recommend this variety to someone unwilling to spray fungicide.

^^^the sunscald is probably the major issue. That really weakened the tree, making it more susceptible to diseases. Do you paint the trunks of any of your trees?

Candy Crisp is my only variety that's shown any sunscald symptoms. The splits are all over the tree. I've got 4 of them and with the same story. You think painting the trunk would make a difference?

I'd guess that CC is probably impacted for life now, but painting the trunk would likely prevent any further damage. Painting trunks prevents sunscald, which then helps keep trees healthier.

Not sure that makes a damn bit of difference but... I've never tasted an Ashmead's, but they are supposed to be somewhat similar to a Golden Russet. I love Golden Russets...which is why I planted the Ashmead's. I have two G.R.s already but may add more down the road. I'll probably let the Ashmead's stay for at least a couple more years. I should start a spray program too...I have a feeling that would help some of these marginal varieties.

^^^how much of each chemical do you use (oz. per gallon)? Do you recall what you paid for Imidan? It looks like most places are only shipping Imidan via Haz Mat now. I did find some on Ebay without Haz Mat rates and am thinking about buying it
