As a general rule firs are slower growing than spruce, and spruce are slower than pine. IMO, firs make the nicest Christmas trees. I'd grow more firs (Concolor, Frasier, and balsam) here if I thought the deer would leave them alone.

In full sun and on soils that dry out in the summer, they won't do well at all.

If I plant a balsam fir where I live, it gets rubbed!

If I plant a balsam fir where I live, it gets rubbed! All evergreens are targets here. Red cedars are about "it" as far as native evergreens go. They get rubbed as do my spruce, pines, and firs.

Does the black weed mat dry out or temp stress the spruce?

Does the black weed mat dry out or temp stress the spruce? Not that I’ve found. Grass will grow up around it.

A couple hundred plugs is no big deal, but weed mats probably triple or more the time (and effort) required. I planted 75 bareroot Ponderosa pines yesterday afternoon (no weed mats). I plan to get 200ish bareroot pines and spruces planted today. One thing I'll say about the bareroot stock I got from Musser...they are huge. Some of the Ponderosas I planted yesterday were over 30" counting the roots. A few were 1/2" caliper

The mats are time consuming ! Some type of power deal by the road.

Norway Spruce, I have not planted all that many. Anyone have Norway’s 10 feet+....Most of mine are less than 6 feet right now.
