I have the most pheasants ever on this farm in the 25 years I have been here. But I will take credit for that. I have extremely wide waterways we do not cut, I don’t cut my hay fields until the middle of june, I leave all crop stubble unplowed and all my corn stand until spring. I have eliminated the DNR on my property! Good for you Mo! I would love to see more landowners do those things. Quail and prairie chickens have taken a huge hit in KS and I think that changes in farming practices have had at least some to do with it. More residue seems to equal more wildlife. Back when every single mailbox in my country had dairy cattle, there were big and small alfalfa fields all over the landscape, that butted up against windbreaks, woods, drainage ditches, lakes, swamps, etc.

^^^ The old guys that I take hunting are all about the sights, sounds, smells, and bringing back memories. Seldom do one of them care about killing something. They just want to be outside and doing what they love to do (old guys know that goose tastes like shit anyway).

Take out the windbreaks, farm into the ditches, leave no residue, and harvest every seed produced. We use to have an old Gleaner combine... we called it the "silver seeder" because it dumped as much seed out the back as it put in the hopper. I wouldn't have wanted to make money with it but it was awfully good for wildlife.

But today ain’t about the killing.

Very cool. Is he dressed like a goose? Nope, dressed in camo. Sat on a tall 5 gal pail 10' from my lay in blind. The geese would circle at about 60 yards and leave. I bet they thought what the fuck is this guy doing sitting there. LOL! He is 76 years old, just wanted to goose hunt one more time. He really thanked me when we got done. He was going home to show his wife the 2 geese and make her pluck them.
He shot a old 870, no vent rib, with 2 3/4" shells. But he got 2 geese with it. Better than I did, but I wasn't really shooting to much. We had fun chatting, it was a good morning.

That's awesome he makes the wife pluck the geese. The women of that generation were very useful.

Finally got into some geese at my brothers place. A few hundred in the area. Tough decoying, but we managed to put a few on the ground for the dog.
