I put in my order for next spring from Chris Pool, I told him to include some "cold hardy" apples or crab apples in the mix. These three are in the order Tollman, Hewes, Spartan. I am not an apple guy, so any feedback on these, just curious.
Also have Liberty, and Chestnut coming, which I have ordered, and read up on.

I have eaten both varieties however. Tolman is one of my favorite apples, but it has a very unique taste. People either love them or hate them it seems. Very, very sweet and no acidity/tartness. Spartan is similar to McIntosh IMO. Nicely fragrant, balanced sweet/tart, juicy....a nice apple but nothing exceptional. Both varieties are considered zone 4 hardy. Both are spur bearing varieties. Good choices IMO

Is Chris still grafting Tolman Sweet to M106 rootstock?

I'm not sure, but Chris said he likes Tollman because it matures later, and has grown successfully in No MN and No Wisconsin, also no disease issues.

I've read that Tolman is a late September to early October apple drop. It is best tasting if stored later into November before eating.

I have no idea how long (or well) Tolman hangs if not picked. I do know they are usually for sale in the orchards I've bought them from in late September/early October.
Tolmans store well for maybe a few weeks, after that they'll start getting soft and mealy pretty quickly (some people like to eat apples that way)

I've got to get in there and open it up more. I remember the apples were late September.

Haralred isn't a bad choice for early October and it is easy to find.

Also, I talked to a friend last night, he plants quite a few apple trees, and he said his best tree so far (this is in Pope County,MN) has been Fireside.

Sounds like a good apple, any comments about how disease resistant it is?

I really don't know, but on a side note, the nursery owner, north of Parkers Prairie was really high on Fireside, he bragged about it for 15 minutes to me. So, I will try to plant a few up there.
