Here are some bedding areas we logged awhile back. Is it time to cut them again or let them go a year or two?

Hi Aaron,
What types of trees are in there?
Would you be cutting and dropping them or hinging?

Poplar I was thinking one of these years cutting them near ground level. Doing it in stages over a few years

From what everyone says the poplar will root sprout quickly from cuts. I think I see some oak in there too. If it were me I'd leave those and cut swatches on the others.

And plant some spruce in those areas you cut open. Plan on releasing the spruce three or four times in the next twenty years. Get a plan on where to plant the spruce, either as bedding clumps or strings for travel lanes.

Years 3 through 13 best for aspen. Not sure on hybrid. If its bedding nuke the oaks as well. Damn deer get breakfast in bed is bullshit.
I would consider a dozer or forestry head creating dollar signs in the bedding with the straight lines as shooting lanes. Works nicely in that age aspen.

I agree with sandbur on the conifers. When I first saw the thread title, I was inclined to suggest leaving every conifer and cutting everything except the oaks to release them. Many times conifers growing in areas like that can have extensive root systems even though they are smaller trees and they will take off with the added sunlight. But alas, no conifers in sight.

Those aspen look like they are just about to the age where they will start thinning themselves. You'll have to cut some of this bigger ones to get sunlight to the ground. I have some areas like that as well.

If that's the spot that keeps you up at night wondering if your cover is thinning, crack a beer and pat yourself on the back.

Ha ha that does keep me up at night we have some really nice bucks and I want to better determine bedding areas and travel corridors since we have thick cover everywhere on this property
