That a mangy yote ? Do you find it's easier to catch the sick ones?

That a mangy yote ? Do you find it's easier to catch the sick ones? They were both mangy. They are probably easier to catch, more desperate for food.

I’ve decided to try and trap a few coyotes this fall. I’ve heard the MB 550 are good traps for them. Remember the eastern coyotes that we have here in N.H. are 24% wolf and larger than the western coyotes. Is this starter set what I need to get going? I’ll try dirt hole sets. For covering the traps do I get a bag of compost from a Home Depot? Also, would a rotten fish/seafood shell bring them into the hole or would that be too much stink? I know when we busted bear a bag of clam shells hung up high you could smell it from 150 yards away. I don’t really want to bring in and catch a bear though. www.minntrapprod.com/mobile/MB-Predator-Starter-Kit-MB-550s/productinfo/550START/If the hornets leave this dug up hole it’ll be one of my sets.

That looks like a great kit. I wouldn't use fish (around here anyway) as you will get a ton of coons, or in your case apparently bears. Yotes like a little visual presentation and a scent. A lure combined with another k9 pee is a good combination. For visual I like a duck wing or something that can be hung off a tree that moves in the wind a little. Dip a couple of feathers into the lures and shove it into the hole. How much do you know about trapping? Do you have the basics down, or need some advice? I'll offer some advice without asking... I sure wouldn't dig up a hornet's nest to set a trap. I can dig a hole a few feet over and feel much better about things!

I’ve trappprd for water animals when I was younger. No ground set knowledge. I know coyotes are tough to trap and I need to be scent free.

I like to put a tarp on the ground that I can kneel on to make the set. I don't touch the ground with hands, knees, or feet. I wear gloves while doing all work, never touch the trap or dirt with bare hands.
I use dirt from the hole to shift over the trap. I've never used compost but it might work.
Put wax paper or something over the pan to keep dirt from shifting in under it.
Bed the trap very solid, if a yote steps on the jaw and it shifts he will dig it up.
I like to guide them in from the front. Put the hole against a rock, log, hill, bale of straw, etc. Maybe place a couple of sticks or wads of grass down on the sides to funnel them in the right direction.
The hole should angle, it isn't straight up and down. Angle it towards the trap.
Don't be afraid to try a blind set or two on trails.
Don't skimp on scent control or making sure everything is good. Trapping takes a lot of time and it's easy to rush through stuff, but if you educate the yotes and don't catch them they become very wary and difficult to trap. Good luck!

Trapping done right is definitely a commitment. I’ve been boiling traps, dyeing, and prepping them for waxing. I bought a half dozen MB550s to try and up my game for catching yotes. We’ll see how it goes. Finally found a new purpose for the dog kennel.

Mb 550’s are great traps. Just set my first 10 traps of the season yesterday. Buddies getting tons of trail cam pics of totes. Got 21 two years ago on his 80 acres.

My one fear of trapping this fall would be I catch a bobcat or two. They’re still protected here in N.H. and we have a few of them. What sort of tool do I catch and release them with besides a 22?

You can buy a catch pole or make one. Pretty cheap instructions on you tube. I built a fairly stout one for just this purpose just in case I catch a bobcat out of season. One thing to be aware of is that cats choke out fairly easily. Once you cinch them down, you want to work quickly to get the trap off and the catch pole released.

I usually take my coat or coveralls off and throw it over the cat. Rush in and pin it. Use a knee to push his body away from the trap. Release the foot. Easy once you've got it covered but they are fast and when approached they are just as likely to come at you as they are to pull away. It's really good sport!

im not too sure if live releasing a bobcat sounds like something I'd ever be interested in.
It seems like a plan that could go wrong in many ways.
