Several years ago I started out thinning junk trees, mainly hard maple and sweet gums, out of a somewhat thin Oak Flat between a clear cut and my summer crop fields. Had watched multiple bucks enter the woods in that area when clear cut was small. The idea was for me to be able to see them while keeping it thick enough from their perspective to make em comfortable. It looks very thin from the pics but it is actually quite thick at about 3 feet. This has become my go to spot for seeing deer and this year I saw 15 in one sit which is a record for me on this place.

I have started a second place this year. The goal will be to get about 150 yards of visibility and promote lower growing plants. I have worked about a day on this one but need several more. This is a major trail and creek crossing going into my summer bean/corn plot. This view right showing the crossing and bean field in foreground. It needs no more work View left, this needs more work but is the direction they come from. I want to get the small trees out and burn it. You can see the trail in center foreground. On my first and at this point, only, sit here I shot a nice freezer doe dead center of pic last day of my trip this year. This are why I am working on this spot.

Welcome BradB
When you cleared competition did you cut and drag out whole logs or cut it into firewood? What plants are regenerating at the lower heights? Are they natives or invasive s.

I am in SE Alabama. I just cut and left everything. Most of what I cut was mid-story stuff wrist to thigh size around and not good firewood. The regeneration is good stuff green briar, blackberry, sage etc. I will spend time late summer spraying out any new hard or soft woods or privet that pop up.

If your hardwood patch is large, I would try and sneak a few conifers in there. Just a few to focus Deer movement after leaf fall or for screening along the field edge.
