We didn't do any clearing around the trees and had luck if you time it right. The grass will come back in the summer however you will set it back.

If you didn't have many treees to spray around roundup would be cheaper and easier. Cover tree spray and move on.

My buddy uses roundup and water mixed in a 5 gal pail. Then he puts a painters pencil roller on a roller with a 5' handle and just rolls the weeds down around the trees. It works for him, better than trying to cover his trees and spraying.

It depends what herbicide you are spraying with, on what grass. So your saying it may be unnecessary, but is there a type of grass or herbicide where doing that would be something you would not want to do? Its always best to spray weeds at label recs. Most grasses are to be sprayed at 6" or under with any herbicide. But with a non selective herbicide like glyphosate, we can get a decent kill no matter how tall the grasses are if you use enough of it seems like.
