How far from apples or crabapples if planting for cover? Is 450 yards enough to plant without concern? When I was researching CAR I looked at info from OSU and K-State (just to be local). With our strong south winds most say you need to be at least a mile to the north with your apple trees. If you're planting apples north of cedars you can get away with a quarter mile. We are never more than a 100yds from a cedar here so I just make sure to buy car resistant varieties. Sounds like my place for distance to red cedars.

I haven't been through northern MN for years, so maybe my memory isn't great...but I don't recall seeing red cedars up there. I'd plant spruce I worked several summers for a survey crew in Cass, Hubbard, and Itasca counties. We cut brush lines in the woods, not all of the technology they have now. I saw one wild red cedar and had to ask what tree it was. It was on the north shore of Woman Lake.

I have no idea what varieties. I’m betting he does not either. Cat and I can give you ideas on which apple trees have worked around red cedars.

If I could find a guy that wants cedar logs. I could keep him very busy.

If I could find a guy that wants cedar logs. I could keep him very busy. Seems the Amish use a lot of red cedar. Find a guy who's making cedar chests and you might get lucky

If I could find a guy that wants cedar logs. I could keep him very busy. I like that first picture but struggle with hunting hills and thermals. My experiences with Whitetails are mostly flatland. What are the elevation changes in that picture?

Art-very steep! The best strategy is to hunt the tops of the ridges. Wind swirls terrible down there. I have been very fortunate to harvest a couple nice bucks, but in both cases, straight south wind that allowed me to sit on the edge of a slight ridge that borders crop land--in the same stand. Unique spot.
We are adding more blinds. This is another factor that allows bucks to become mature. There are times when I cannot hunt many stands, and it is not easy to get to the tops of the ridges. Long walk in, and steep climb.

I was able to order 36 14-20" red cedar container (plug type) from Jason Tank-Habitat Management. They are $4-5 each. You would not need any weed control on these, and they grow pretty fast.

I saw a question on Red Cedar plugs, I think Itasca had them last year, but not 100% sure? I ordered some container plugs this year, but that source had seed issues so they will not have cedar in 2022. They will have Black Hills Spruce, Norway Pine, etc...

We made a nice access trail through the cedars to a stand in the oaks in Iowa. That is hard work, the bottom branches of the cedars are not easy to work with. The past trails we opened up in the cedars are really getting use. It is time consuming. One area at a time. Back down in April...but these gas prices are noticeable!

More chainsaw work in February and March . I will never get it all done. I did see deer using my cedar trails last weekend. I guess it’s gonna be habitat change over time !

So if we cut lower cedar branches, should we cut to eye level (5-6 feet)? For the deer—travel & bedding. Any reason to go higher ?
We have a 3 day weekend planned in March ! Much needed !
