Nice SC. Do yiu have others planted? That tree should make a big job each year now and put on girth and width now that its roots are set.

I have one other tree planted about 30' away. It is only about 4' tall because my dumbass broke the leader earlier this summer on accident!

I have about 10 chestnuts on my trees. Should I pick them now and put them in the fridge for planting next year?

Wear leather gloves. Pop it open and see if the nuts are full like his? If so, yes, you can put them in a ziploc and refrigerate them. Be aware they'll be sprouting a root before te ground clears next spring though. Are you able to plant them inside in pots Until frosts clear? I'd say they'll sprout in late January.

That means yours are later droppers which some consider a good thing. My guess is you'll see a change within the next two weeks.

You know funny it is to have other people talk about your nuts?
Mo, as mine turned brown they then started to split open - reminded me of when beechnuts open just much larger, once they got to the point where I could really see the nut I pulled the husk back. I only got 1 good nut per husk with 2 other under-developed ones as well. I took mine and just tossed them in the fridge.

Wildfire - it's hard to get an idea of scale on those. How big are they? I know I had some that where smaller and didn't produce a viable nut. The larger ones that produced a single viable nut where the size of your fist or better. I left mine on the tree until the bur started to open on it's own.....that made messing with them a little simpler. Those damn spines are sharp!!!!

Here are my first ones. Does anyone want these? Congrats Jerry, you have some of the furthest north bearing chestnuts that I'm aware of.

I am by no means an expert.....at all, but I would bet the "small ones" don't produce a viable nut and the larger ones may only produce a single viable nut based on what I have been told...... Peel 'em open and see what ya got! I'm out waiting my local retailer for 3 gallon container trees......they still like them more than I do at $30/ea. They will go on sale here at some point and I'll get them for 50% off.....still spend as much, but get twice as many trees! They seem to not sell well in the fall....which is fine with me as I have not had any issue with survival over the winter when fall planted and I like a discounted price. May even try a steeper discount if I buy quite a few..... we will see.

Congrats Wildfire. Did you grow your trees from seed or where did you buy them?

Forest Keeling in Mo. They were $11.95 each in a 3 gallon pot. Check out their website.
