Pretty sure I found a hen today. At the base of an oak?

What do you suppose those spots are? Normal or is it starting to turn?

Mud splatters from a recent rain. They washed off (kind of).

That's outta my wheelhouse. I've hever seen/noticed it before. The Myself Reliance Guy did a video this week on edible mushrooms and he had one similar to this that he called bear tooth. This log is on the new property.

Pretty sure I found a hen today. At the base of an oak? So it sounds like a lot of mushrooms like growing at the base of oaks? If the land deal goes through I'll be looking for them next year. Are the morels only out at one time of the year or through the fall?

Morels will only be in the spring. You will find them growing out of the ground and not on logs.
I’ve never found a hen, chanterelle or anything wild that I knew I could eat other than a morel. My new place seems to have a wide variety of fungus but I haven’t identified anything edible. I hope that’s a sign a morels to come this spring.

What Reagan said; morels are only out in the springtime (and where I'm at it seems they are only out for a week or so). nhmountains, if you find some next spring and are unsure post some pics. Morels are very easy to identify.
I spent most of my life only eating morels. It wasn't until about 4yrs ago that I found my first chanterelle. After an exhausting amount of research I was confident enough to try one. Now I find them easy to distinguish from others. I just found and ate my first Oyster a week ago, and the Hen I found yesterday was also a first. I had a couple of bites last night and am still alive this morning! Once again I researched to the point of redundancy and even posted pics on mushroom identification pages just to get more opinions from experienced people. So far I've been fine, but I won't eat anything that has a poisonous look-a-like.

I found my first chicken a few years ago, and I thought it was really good.

I thought the oyster was good. Worth it? Probably not, but I enjoy finding stuff so it's fun.

my son and I found a bunch of morels this afternoon. I proceeded to cook up a bunch for dinner and I ate too many. Way, way too many. I'm not feeling too good now and I ate 3 hours ago. Eventually this will either pass or I'll end up shitting the bed tonight.

Are these anything? They’re on a poplar I cut down two years ago.

Those are beyond my skill set. I would need an up close pic of top and bottom to have a chance at ID. Even then I wouldn’t trust me.
Funny how things change. My earlier post on this thread about what I know. I’m now solid on chanterelle and have eaten them the last 2 seasons. Boletes will be eaten the next season.

A maybe identity would be 'turkey tail' mushrooms. They have great medicinal value. Not sure at all on that id.
