The year was 2006. I was in Winona for the weekend visiting my girlfriend that had fled back to college life after 6 months in the real world. I could tell by her body language that night she'd rather be back at the bar with the pizza delivery guy instead of me, who was off in the real world 150 miles away, trying to get adult life going.
It was at that moment, I decided I was gonna drive down to LaCrosse the next day, soon as she left for work, and get fully outfitted for bow hunting, knowing full well I'd no longer have to take that heartless jezebel to Olive Garden after this weekend. I walked into the archery shop, not sad or down, but excited for all the free time I'd have to go bow hunting. I told the shopkeep that I would buy nothing unless I could leave race-ready.
After 90 minutes, he had me 100% outfitted, sighted in, and $1,000 deeper in credit card debt. I didn't care. I was free. I bought a used Mathews Classic bow. Sure as shit, that night, she had "the talk" with me. I was relieved. I looked right at her and said one of the most profound relationship enders I've ever come up with. "I get it. The only thing left to do is for us to get real drunk tonight and have wild breakup sex."
I still have that bow today and it works fine. Tonight I've got to take it into the archery shop to get it worked on, and I got to wondering... After all these years, I really have no idea what makes one bow superior to another. Is it weight? Noise? Comfort? Accuracy? I have no idea. I like the one I have, but have no idea if I am missing something.

Personal pref.
I cant stand the feel of Mathews. Son has a Prime. Love that bow.
I have a PSE Evo. Very happy with it. Feels good. Shoots great.
Have u ever had your bow restrung?

Bows, guns, cars, women......not everything that glitters is gold my friend!
I still shoot the only bow I have ever owned (bought in the early 2000's - used). It's not single cam, parallel limb, some fancy camo pattern, or supper light, super quiet or super fast......however. I still kill deer with it! I do my part....it does it's part....what more can a fella ask for!
it's all marketing to get you to part with your money. A lighter, faster, quieted bow isn't going to help me kill more deer.....it's not going to make me a better hunter.
What makes Dodge, Ford or Chevy any better than the other? it's about what you like, what you have had good luck with and what is important to you.

I own a 10 year old Parker and it shoots just fine for whitetail. I have not shot a new bow although friends brag about them. I'm not certain if a new bow will enable me to kill more whitetail deer.
The only reason I would update my bow is if I was going west and attempting 50+ yard shots. My guess is this is exactly what will happen as a mule deer bow hunt is on the list. One thing about bow hunting is it allows you to go into better bow hunting areas with less preference points.
If you don't like your bow or want a change I would not hesitate to change.

Value of the barter. All of my bows have been bartered. I did buy one bow for cash but I doubled my money on it in 3 days.

Be fun to have a perspective chart so guys could normalize their spending. Land/lease tractor/wheeler/rake compound/crossbow/willow whip and the dollars associated to bell curve you as a hunter. |

I have a 2004 Parker hanging in my man cave. It would still kill deer if I shot it.
I have a “new” Parker that is probably a 2012 or so. I don’t see any reason to get a new bow. People who buy a new one every year or two are nuts.

Had the dude look at it tonight and he said it was good to go. Had to slide the watchamadoo back up the string by the cam, otherwise it's all good yet. Helps that most years all I ever did was wax it, never even shot it. |
