Hi All, First time landowner, long time deer hunter here. Well, soon to be landowner. Have a survey pending and then good. Just bought an all wooded 35 acres that sits between a huge block of timber and some ag fields. It is mostly Sugar Maple with some Red Maple, Red Oak, Yellow Birch, and some huge old Hemlocks interspersed throughout. There are some subtle elevations changes on the property, including a ridge just north of my property and a ridge on the south side of the land, both rising about 20'. When I walked the property the deer sign was off the charts. I suspect it is very much a pass through property that I would like to improve on and invite the deer to stick around more. It was select cut a couple of years ago and it looks like they did a beautiful job. I don't know that I will have a lot to contribute right away, but have plenty to learn. I came from hunting a farm (lease) the last 14 years. Things change over time and there are issues there now. The land has become so thick with buckthorn, etc. that you just don't see deer like we used to. I am excited to have the opportunity to do what I want to a piece of property and hopefully, reap the benefits. Gonna start slow and try and avoid mistakes. Looking forward to learning a bit from all of you. Already learned a lot about badbrad just from reading this thread!

Welcome to the club. Best habitat forum on the web unless you are an easily offended snowflake type.

Welcome Ruttin. I hope your land deal goes through. There’s a wealth of knowledge on this website that will give you honest answers. I’ll even throw in the first answer. Pass on buying chestnuts unless you have plenty of open, dry ground that is in zone 4 or warmer. I’d concentrate on releasing the red oaks you do have. Once you have that land be sure to open a thread with some land photos so we can give you more advice.

Welcome! This is a strange group, ‘cept for me. Are the hemlock providing much cover? I am a spruce fan and would look at ways to focus movements through open hardwoods with conifers. Your elevation changes might all ready do that. Spruce can make bedding pockets, travel lanes, and can screen outside edges. Pines can do the same, but they tend to lose lower limbs faster.
