Ok, I've been thinking of getting a decoy. Who use's them? What do you use? Do you think they are worth it?

You followed my decoy hunt on the "live from the stand" hunt on Saturday right? I ended up having 5 different bucks come to it that afternoon... I love decoy hunting!

Buck decoys are great in areas that have lots of bucks.

Spend the $30 and buy one of those Renzo's and experiment with it some. I can't say how they would react where there are really low deer numbers but they have worked well for me on many different properties over a long period of time (I don't remember when I bought it but it was probably at least a decade ago). Deer are moody. The first buck I saw Saturday afternoon barely looked up at it, then a couple of hours later the same buck came back through and stiff-legged right up to it with his ears pinned back ready to fight.
I've had very few bad experiences with a buck decoy. A lot of times they ignore it, but that isn't a big deal. Very seldom do they react badly.
I've almost nothing but bad reactions to a doe decoy.

I love using a decoy as well. My tight ass uses an old 3D foam archery target, with a piece of white plastic wal-mart bag tied to its ass. I have not had near as much luck with the 2D type ones. I use it out in the open fields where deer can see it and the movement from a great distance and they will come investigate. I have pulled deer from several hundred yards away. No calling or rattling or scents...just the visual. I prefer to use a small buck decoy. The does will pay little attention to it...which is good. If you use a doe decoy, the resident does freak out! The resident does know all the other does and as such your decoy is an invader and the does will act really stupid and weird trying to investigate the intruder. Bucks will respond to either buck or doe. A doe they will try to circle downwind and approach mostly from the rear. A small buck decoy they will bristle up and walk all stiff legged and come at the head. If at all possible you want to be positioned between where the deer will be coming from and the decoy. You don't want the deer to ever reach the decoy...in my opinion. That decoy will draw their full focus and you can nearly do jumping jacks in your stand! DO NOT use a decoy in heavy cover...it freaks the deer out because they have no idea it's there. Also use some orange ribbon on the decoy if hunting during firearm season or near a road. I have had people stop on the road and gawk before.... I am not a fan of the BIG buck decoys out there. Most of those are so big they would intimidate any deer in my woods. That isn't what you want. You want a doe or a small basket racked buck in my opinion. I have even staged a bedded doe with a small tending buck before... That was how I figured out you don't want the deer to reach the decoy! The trick with a decoy is being able to add motion to it and being able to use the visual from a fair distance.

Buck decoys are great in areas that have lots of bucks. What about areas where there not so many? Only a certain percentage of bucks will approach a decoy. And you will likely scare off the shy ones. Areas with not many bucks are shitty hunting in general. They should be sold a fund another area.

I've had good luck with them over the years. We have a Primos Scar Face and Flambeau Boss Buck. Doe decoys piss off the does so I always use a buck. The Boss Buck does not have stakes and it blew over twice on Friday night so I propped it against my scrape tree. Looked shitty but had a nice 10 pointer blow it up sending the head flying. He was obviously a fighter because I broke off a brow tine and the G3 on his right sight.
The Dave Smith buck decoy looks awesome but is spendy.

Anyone who uses decoys, what have you found to work the best to make it scent free as possible? I've got one coming and am assuming there will be a smell to it from manufacture and just being new. There are so many out there and I really don't know which to use. Thanks

There are so many out there and I really don't know which to use. Thanks I spray mine down with scent eliminate. I also leave mine laying by blind/stand all year long. I do take the antlers and tail into blind so critters don't chew on them. As far as deer scent I use a wick with appropriate scent for time of season and remove that after hunting.

I don't trust the scent elimination sprays. I leave my decoy outside for a while before using it. I don't use scents on it or with it...

Anyone who uses decoys do you find they work better for morning or evening hunts?
I picked one up but haven't used it yet.
