When is the best time to cut iron wood so it causes it to sucker? Does time of year matter? Thinking about cutting a bunch this winter as long as it will cause suckering.

I should also add I am not looking to hinge cut the ironwood. Have not had good results with it and wanted to thicken up some areas dominated by ironwood.

I try not to cut ironwood because it dulls my chain very quickly. If you're going to cut it would you be better of spraying the stumps to kill it and let other types of trees grow? What are the other types of trees in that area?

I don't know the answer, but I remember Stu being a huge proponent of saving ironwood.

I'm not an expert but most trees respond to being cut while dormant. I would cut them in the spring before they wake from dormancy. I understand suckering can be encouraged by lightly disturbing the roots.

I do a similar practice with hedge (osage orange). It doesn't sucker, but it turns into a huge bush at deer level if you stump cut it. Makes for a jungle of a mess, scores very high in palatablity, high in protein, and low in tannins. It ranks as the number one forage tree in KS. I've found Mulberry to be similar to hedge but it isn't as abundant here. I don't know anything about iron wood. Does it have similar browse qualities? I try to make my cover dual purpose if at all possible.

What are the other types of trees in that area? My sharpener guy started giving me full chisel cut when he realized I only cut hedge. My chains stay sharp much longer now.

Thanks guys. I have never done the hack and squirt method will need to research it.
I can not think of what ironwood is good for besides cover.

I want to create some more cover and sanctuaries and try and get bucks to travel to various areas on the property since the nicer bucks don’t seem to come out of cover to the foodplots with the does. Need to create some new trails/barriers or something so we can see them when they are moving through the cover.

I believe it's steril as it dos not produce a berry. It grows as a tall cylindrical shrub. I've been tempted to use it as a screen but haven't pulled the trigger. Buckthorn is one of the few shrubs/Trees that keeps its leaves well into winter. The problem with allot of these plantings is by the time rifle season starts they provide little cover.

You want results you bring in heavey equipment. Dozers excavators or forestry heads and not the skid steer crap. Go big if you want real results. Hinge cuts can’t compare

I had a guy in this year with a bobcat and cutter and he can cut some impressive stuff. That wouldn’t work Brooks?
I was also told by a guy to not cut ironwood too low it will kill it and not have it sprout out.

I have Been less than impressed with what lesser tools accomplish. Chain saws/bobcats do so so. Shit bang for buck.
The big shit used right changes deer activity.
No absolutes.

I don't get much suckering from ironwood when I hinge or cut it. It does grow well on its own though. Here's some I hinge cut a few years ago. Attachments:
