I have enough ironwood to cut for weeks. They seem to mix in with mature ash & oak. Going after some tomorrow. Ironwood (Am. hop hornbeam) will dominate the understory in a mature oak forest. IMO, they're just as "invasive" as buckthorn and honeysuckle.

My neighbor cut a bunch for posts. Not a bad idea ?

The to do list increases. I need to tip a bunch of ironwood in an area of timber in Iowa. I was surprised how many rubs I saw on the ironwood trees. I told my neighbor who burns wood, to have it this spring. There’s hundreds if not thousands that serve really no purpose !

How long does Ironwood need to dry for it to burn well in a wood burner? Any downsides ?

I don't think I've ever seen an ironwood rubbed here. I do find scrapes under them frequently.
I don't know how long it takes to dry to burn decently in a woodburner. From what I can tell, it just kind of smolders forever in a firepit.

I dropped a bunch of ironwood branches for the deer on my 4 acres. Very active with trails… also added some leftover RO dogwood sticks and they ate them all.

My neighbor to north in Iowa spent 4-5 days tipping ironwood and cutting cedar. He said he probably cut 1000 trees total. While down there he also shot/trapped 6 coyote, a bobcat and a raccoon. I need to do something similar, but we will have 4 guys so that will help … Pic of some of the coyotes.

I am running into more ironwood every time I’m the woods. It looks like a busy off season !

Ironwood is quite literally far more invasive here than buckthorn My new place has very little buckthorn, but lots of ironwood and siberian elms. Do the deer like browsing ironwood at all? I've dropped a few big ones, but haven't been back to check for signs of browsing.

They appear to especially like the tops that have a lot of catkins in them. FWIW...I bumped a grouse eating ironwood catkins today.

A meal of grouse is hard to beat.
