So your truck has an oil life % meter but your dealership says it should be changed much more often. What do you guys do? Base it on miles driven or when your truck asks for an oil change?

My truck is too old to have an oil life meter!
I try to change my oil between 3000 and 4000 miles.

don't care about the meter. 3000-3500 miles for sure. I did this with my 5.4 gas and got 311,000 miles on that truck and it still runs great and using no oil yet.

I follow the oil life meter, of course the dealership wants me to come in more often, more $ for them

Around 4K miles I start thinking about it. Usually, end up getting it done around 5K. I keep thinking I'll just go with the oil life meter. But years of conditioning by my Dad and the local mechanic makes me fold and change it out.

I drive a Honda Ridgeline (a gentlemen's truck ). The service manager at Honda said he won't change oil on my pickup until it nears the oil change meter prompt. With the good filters and synthetic oils these days......you can get up to 7,000 miles or so if you don't live on a dusty road or operate in the dirt.

Oil is cheap both ways, whether cheap oil at 3000 or good oil at 6000. I'm very conservative when I dump mine anyway. I've pushed the Cavy to 220,000 miles now and the only problem I'm dealing with is a faulty blinker switch when it's below ten degrees, broken CD player, NO A/C, busted dash, door leaks, and plate sized holes in the body. Still purs like a silver cat though and runs down the interstate at 81 without the slightest shake. Those oil monitors are very accurate too. They compensate for when to change based on driving style by counting engine starts, stop and goes in a city, etc. As long as you're using the required grade of oil or better, trust the monitor. That is unless you know you have an earlier generation monitor that wasn't as intuitive.

I start thinking about it at 6k miles. That is usually when truck starts telling me to get it done.

Depends on oil that you are using and type of driving city/highway. I go 5000 to 6000 on 2011 pickup, 3000 to 4000 on 2000 pickup and 3000 to 4000 on wife's vehicle.

Just check it once a year and top it off if it's low. Honestly I'm more of a 3000 miles type of guy. I use full synthetic and high quality filters. I know they say you can go further but I have trouble changing the way I was raised... and it works. My experience is the engine is always last to go. I tend to change water pumps, alternators, valve cover gaskets, and everything else attached to the engine twice before the engine starts show signs of wear.

Hahahahaha....my truck (my daily) is a '96! Oil life meter? You mean the metal stick thingy that you look at that you say, "Yep - got oral in it, dip stick says it got 'nuff, run it" Ain't got no reason to change it...it leaks to the point all I do is put fresh oil in it!!!
Should have seen my kids with the vent windows and have to actually use the crank handles to drop the window! Oil life meter...WTF!
I change mine every 3 to 4K....

Cavy is 3000 now that she's in her golden years. I still run a full synthetic, but with fuel showing in the oil, I don't push it.

Those were around when you had to lean over from the driver seat to unlock the passenger door I believe.

Once it gets hot out it does a number on the oil. I change mine at 3500 usually.
