Nice looking tree. My chestnut crabs haven't dropped fruit yet though so I can't answer your question.

according to U of M site
Chestnut Crabapple Large, russeted crabapple with a rich, nutty flavor. Best for fresh eating or sauce. The fruit stores for 4 to 5 weeks. Introduced in 1949.
Ripens early September.

My chestnuts usually drop from just after Labor Day into about the first week of October. A bit of fruit can hang on into winter during some years.
With the drought and the extra heat this summer, some of the chestnuts look and taste like the third week of September. Dolgo also started to drop early this year.
Save a few chestnuts on the tree until they reach watercore, when the taste is excellent.

Is Chestnut more attractive than Dolgo for wildlife ? Opinions ? Critters here eat them both. Chestnut ripens and drops a bit later than Dolgo

Chestnut crabs are ripe and starting to drop. Right on schedule for bow opener on Saturday. I won’t be out there.

81 for our opener this Saturday. Not exactly excited about that but if the rain holds off I'll probably sit Saturday night.

I am going to sit in the stand this weekend(86 degree forecast) in Missouri and see what happens? Too hot I know. Mornings might be better. I am seeing a few bucks moving though on camera. No apples down there, but plenty of acorns!
