Hawthorns are browsed pretty heavily, so they grow pretty slow if you have a lot of deer. I have a decent number of them both at home and at the cabin. They are a solid native shrub/small tree to have around for both small game and deer cover. This statement made me slow down and think a bit. You're right, at least with hawthorn from maybe knee height and below. They do get heavily browsed in winter/early spring. It seems once they're maybe 5'ish tall, I don't see much browsing on the leaves/twigs however. I have some really ugly looking hawthorns at my cabin. I planted a couple hundred in tree rows and forgot about them since I didn’t notice them for years. Now 15 years later I see a couple dozen random hawthorns holding on in those rows, but they are only 2-4 feet tall since they are browsed so hard. I’ve started putting cages around them for a year or two and that gets the growth above the browse like. They fill in pretty quickly and the thorns seem to keep the bucks from rubbing the trunks. I have a couple hawthorns patches growing at home that seem to be spreading slowly. When I find a wild hawthorn growing I leave a few tree tops around them for a natural browse guard. It really seems to help.

My Chestnut looks to be loaded this year. I should probably do some thinning in a couple weeks.

Once again, the Chestnut crab looks to be my best (young) apple tree. I’ll post pics in Late August. Pretty full of fruit for small trees.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a Chestnut Crab die yet ? I’ve lost a few others . Seems to be a very hardy tree !
