What kind of copper and dormant oil do you recommend? I bought a 15 gallon sprayer to put in my ATV trailer, so maybe this is the year I'll get around to spraying like I should.

I bought a pint of Southern Ag Copper Fungicide a few years ago. I don't recall offhand the application rates, but it isn't much per gallon of water, maybe 4-6 teaspoons/gallon of water. Next time I buy copper it will be some more expensive stuff like Kocide, it is supposed be longer lasting/more impactful. I use Bonide brand oil. That's what Amazon had when I ordered and it was cheap. Again, not sure of the application rate but I think right around a quart per 15 gallons of water. Do read the labels on whatever copper and oil you use. When applying to dormant trees, there aren't too many issues to be aware of. Once trees are at green tip and beyond, you need to really pay attention to application rates and timing. Also, I add spreader/sticker to the oil and copper mix. Usually either Southern Ag or Bonide, whichever I get cheaper. I also add spreader/sticker to my fungicide/insecticide mix but again, you really have to pay attention to rates and timing. You can damage young fruitlets.

I went to order the Bonide brand oil on Amazon just now and it said I bought some last year. I must have asked you last year and bought a jug of the stuff and forgot about it.

Shit, I was just looking at copper fungicides. Somewhere along the line I got confused. 4-5 teaspoons per gallon of the Southern Ag copper I have equates to about 13 oz./per 15 gallons. I've been under applying the stuff.
Since I'll be using up what copper I have this year, I just ordered 4 lbs. of Kocide 3000. Application rate for that is 2 TBS per gallon so about 15 oz. per 15 gallons of water. 4 lbs. should last me 5-6 years. It probably takes around 10 gallons of mix to hit all of my trees currently.

Finally, the forecast looks like I can get copper and dormant oil sprayed any day this week.

Got the copper and dormant oil on this morning. I'm going to need to upgrade/upsize sprayers soon.

Is there anything you watch for in the weather to determine whether or not to spray other than forecasted rain in the near future? I bought a 15 gallon wand sprayer that I'll tow behind in my atv trailer as I spray from the ATV seat. Or at least that's how I'm hoping it will work.

You want 48 hours with temps from 40-70 and no significant rain. I also add 3 TBS of spreader/sticker to the mix.

I bought a gallon of Southern Ag spreader sticker last year. When that runs out, I plan to get a jug of Nufilm 17 edit...I should add that 3 TBS per 15 gallon tank is a heavy rate. When there's no foliage present, that's not an issue. If you add spreader/sticker to an insecticide/fungicide spray when trees are leafed out, the rate is more like 1.5 TBS per 15 gallon tank. Spreader/sticker can burn foliage at heavy rates.

Stu - My sticker/spreader order arrived, so I can finally spray. The temps are warm though and some of my apple trees have 1/4" leaves. Is it still OK to go ahead with the insecticide/fungicide and dormant copper spray with the sticker/spreader or would it be better to hold off until the temps are a little cooler in a few days?

I believe you can spray up to 1/4" green and be okay, but I don't know about the temp. I saw some folks in northern IA were in the 90s today. I wouldn't spray when it's that hot. I think you'd be okay if you sprayed in the morning or evening when it was cooler, and then it got up to maybe 80 after you sprayed...but I've never done it.

I'll read the labels tonight and see what is recommended. I was hoping this was the year I would stay on top of the spraying plan a little better, but I'm not off to a good start. On the bright side, the wet April seems to have replenished some of the soil moisture.

It is pretty crazy how fast they grew in the past week. I think I was at 1/4" green a week ago and now some of the trees have main leaders that have 3" of new growth. Lots of variance though - some trees have large leaves and some aren't even 1/4" green yet. I'm assuming I should hold off on spraying until after the flowering phase, but let me know what you would do.
