Looks like the end of next week will be good for dormant oil and copper.

Sprayed my trees with the first dose of 1 cup Imidan, 1.5 cups Captan, 1.25 TBS Indar, 1.5 TBS Eagle, and 2 TBS Nu-Film P.
This is the first time I've added the Eagle (myclobutanil). I bought it for CAR control, but this year doesn't seem like a bad year for CAR. I added it because it is another systemic fungicide like Indar, but I understand it works differently. By using both systemic and non-systemic (Captan) you get both preventive and curative actions. By tank mixing multiple fungicides, you also help prevent resistant diseases from getting started. My next round of spray I'll only add one or the other of the systemics. Captan is probably still the best preventive fungicide out there. It is just short lived.
edited to add...In doing some more reading on apple scab, I'm probably 3 weeks late with my first application of fungicide. Seems like I may want to do an application of fungicide (no insecticide) and Nu-Film P in early May. The same would be true for CAR control.

Yeah it's so dry I wonder if we'll have to contend with much other than insects, I have noticed a split in my Chestnut Crab though that I had never seen. Admittedly the last 2 years I haven't really looked at my trees much so maybe it started before then. I will have to post some pictures of it, I have some white paint I'll throw on their soon but I'm not even sure its from the sun.

I followed Stu’s example and sprayed this morning. I was done by 7:30. Dang, I wish I was three or four feet taller.
With some rain, I should have first fruit on Goodland and St Edmunds Russet. September Ruby also has a fair amount of fruit after having just a few apples other years.
Trees are sure wind whipped. We had a short gale last night but the rain stayed east of us.

I think I get more excited about trying new varieties than I do about producing huge crops. Like you, with some rain I should be able to taste a number of new ones this year. At some point, I should be able to pick and eat fruit from late august through firearm season (later as well, but they'll probably be frozen solid).

Spray question
So I have never sprayed much. I have done copper fungicide a couple times over the years.
If I am to do just some basic scheduled spraying, what is best to do, how often and when?
I have never had a problem with bugs or diseases but want to kind of be preventive at least at a low level. I was going to spray copper fungicide this weekend just because I have it.

Be careful spraying copper on actively growing trees. Make sure you read and follow the label. I don't spray copper on actively growing trees, so no experience doing so. I've read it can burn leaves and fruit. Why spray if you've never had a problem with bugs or diseases? Copper builds up in the soil over time and can kill earthworms. It's also tough to get rid of once it's there. I don't spray unless there's a reason. edit...I use Kocide 2000 copper fungicide. The label says "Note: Moderate to severe crop injury may occur from late application; discontinue use when green-tip reaches 1/2" " page 7 gcrec.ifas.ufl.edu/static/docs/pdf/strawberry-pathology/Fung-label/2008/kocide-2000.pdf

Why spray? Preventive in light applications? I am surely not hell bent to do it by any means. I just dont want a big surprise that was unexpected either. Maybe best to just ride it out? I am fine with one less thing to do. LOLLLL. Are you having multiple different issues? I have seen numerous different applications you have done already this year. I just want to keep up with the "Jones's".

The apple trees I planted at my cabin look pretty nice without spraying, so I leave them alone. I’m assuming that’s because apple trees are uncommon in my specific area there, so apple pests are somewhat rare.
By my house my trees have fruit that isn’t too pretty, so I’m hoping spraying this year helps. Everyone here has a few apple trees in their yard, so pests are common. The deer could care less though, but I’d like some better looking fruit to eat and give away.
I know very little about spraying apple trees, but I’m hoping to eventually have fruit that looks as good as some of the others here.

I just want to keep up with the "Jones's". Yep. Plum curculio, apple maggot fly, apple scab, CAR (not terrible, but some), sooty blotch, fly speck, fireblight (not a lot, but some in wet years), tent worms, inch worms, codling moth, aphids, San Jose scale,....that's what comes immediately to mind. Oops forgot frogeye spot... If I spray dormant oil/copper just before bud break and 3 shots of Imidan/Captan/spreader-sticker I effectively deal with most of those issues. If you aren't worried about "pretty" apples and don't mind eating a few worms then spraying is no big deal. Deer and coons definitely don't give a shit about pretty apples. If you ever want to give some fruit away to people who've never grown an apple, then doing some spraying may be a good idea. Many people aren't interested in eating scabby, dirty looking (flyspeck/sooty blotch), buggy apples.

I got my two main orchards mowed yesterday and today. Not a lot of grass, but there were a good number of daisies and asters blooming. I wanted to knock the blossoms off before spraying a 2nd shot. In looking at the forecast, I think I'll aim to spray Friday a.m. Given the length of time since I've sprayed (nearly a month) and the recent rain event, I'm guessing I'm going to end up with more flyspeck/sooty blotch than I like, but maybe I'll still get lucky.
