I was reading through the proposed bonding bill to see how much land the state was aiming to gobble up this year with bonding. So far the target looks like $25 million dollars. I also stumbled across another layer in forest redundancy and the incestuous relationship between the DNR and the do-good shell groups they use to gobble up land and dupe ignorant sportsmen. files.dnr.state.mn.us/assistance/backyard/forestlegacy/forestsfortheFutureReport_2008.pdfIntroducing the Forests for the Future Program. It reads as a regular who's who of the whole revolving door network of DNR to MDHA to Nature Conservancy. See any names you recognize? This dates back to 2008, so it's neat to see how these guys have jumped around. These documents live for 25-50 years, and once they have them, they just keep pouring money into them. It wouldn't be a MN government report if they didn't spell out the extreme threat of private land ownership. From page 2: 4. Changes in ownership and parcelization can threaten the future of public recreational access to large tracts of forest land. They can also limit access to public lands for timber and habitat management. Parcelization and related development may threaten the competitiveness of the timber industry and contribute to habitat fragmentation, which can increase the spread of invasive species and reduce wildlife habitat and water quality. It also wouldn't be a government report without a recommendation to strip 890 squares miles of forests of private property rights via easements. That's just with this program. From page 3. 9. Program Funding. The program should work with partners (DNR employees we plant in NPOs) to leverage public and private funds, spur new investments, and coordinate with other conservation programs to protect highest priority private forest lands from development. Like the acreage targets, funding needs must be based on additional analysis. The approximate cost to meet the program’s long-term target of protecting 270,000 to 530,000 acres throughout Minnesota is $165 million to $310 million in today’s dollars.

What's really interesting is forestry seems to be the only acceptable economic benefit in the state's eyes. Its supposedly about jobs and the economy, but only if it's forestry jobs. If actual communities sprout up in the woods due to people living there and being able to make a living with other land uses however, that isn't in the state's master plan. They say wildlife and hunting are important, but we know that's a load of shit.

If you're wondering how big 890 square miles of land really is. That is all of the land in Sherburne county times 2 with acres left over still. Given that the northwoods is already about 3/4 government owned or controlled, this means that this program alone could likely buy up about all the land in 9 Sherburne county sized blocks. Lessard Sams has a goal ten fifteen times the size of Forests for the Future program.

Nothing will change. The people of Minnesota are lemmings and will continue to fall off the cliff no matter what.

I'd close up shop and buy in MO.

I have Also heard the whole lemming suicide story is bullshit. At the rate they're going, my place could be on the national register of historic places in 20 years. "This is one of the last remaining pieces of private property in the northwoods of MN. For a hundred years, the state slowly bought up all the land to protect it from people using it, so people could use it, but just in ways approved of by the ministry of plenty. Over there, you can see to this day, this camp is still run off solar panels. Just next to them is the owners fish pond. Rumor has it, an old drunken rain dancer that was only known by the name Foggy had to do the polar plunge in that pond. He bet the owner that he'd quit his solar in less than five years."

You’re on a roll SD but, you better check Bobs keyboard batteries because He hasn’t given his input on this MN issue.

You’re on a roll SD but, you better check Bobs keyboard batteries because He hasn’t given his input on this MN issue. A sea of communists and fools. Once it’s gone, you’ll never get it back. To think the same people who are trying to ban guns and make the entire state a paved bicycle trail are going to keep hunting rights and game production in tact on those lands is fool hardy. Our forefathers would be ashamed we squandered this freedom.

Lots of stress for a neutered male. No shit. I’m the one home alone for three days while he’s out there living it up. Do I get a new jackalope chew toy or a #10 mug for a water bowl? Nope. But he takes KBB out for chislic and beers at the Baltic Corner the first chance he gets. Well I left a steaming pile of half digested cat food on the bathroom floor overnight to voice my opinion.

Camp Ripley is getting in on the war on private land. While I was busy watching the tiny $25 million dollar grab proposed in the bonding bill, Ripley was busy blowing $53 million on gobbling up development rights. So far they've nabbed 26,000 acres (41 square miles) and they reportedly have 200 more owners anxious to sell their land rights as well. Start prepping the kids and grand kids for public land expectations, cause that's all they're going to get.

Start prepping the kids and grand kids for public land expectations, cause that's all they're going to get. The argument is that the area around Camp needs to be protected from development to preserve the ability of camp to function. Only willing landowners are involved and some of the land remains in private hands and is good deer hunting. Too much housing around and Camp can’t function. I am about 15 miles away and we still can hear the artillery. I somewhat buy the idea at present. The north end of camp is very close to expanding Brainerd/Baxter.
