I fell asleep in the blind this morning. A black bird to the face would have been some excitement at least. Give me deer or duck hunting any day over turkey hunting. Think I’ve shot 4 spring birds in 15 years of hunting. This is the worst Turkey season I have had since I bought my land in 2004. Are your numbers down due to winter kill or something else you think?

I am thinking winterkill. There were plenty of turkeys around last fall. I saw one hen early Thursday morning and that is it so far.

Everybody keeps saying how many turkeys there are but alll of my areas see fewer every year. It appears many areas of the country are seeing declines.
And MN DNR has decided its time to liberalize the season again.

Do you guys just sit in a blind and hope to call one in? I like moving and finding a vocal bird. Hunting out of blind for turkeys is my least favorite way.

I like to run and gun. I’ve had permission to hunt some big properties for turkeys and I can’t sit still if there is room to roam.
Spent the last couple of days exploring national forest. I may try to walk in deeper than the average lazy person and find one dumb enough to come to my gun.
I have never hunted public land for turkeys but will try some this year if my daughter kills on my land.
We open tomorrow and I will be in a blind with my daughter at my new place. Two gobblers worked down my ridge Saturday morning. Hope they repeat in the AM.

My son hunted friday saturday and this morning. No gobbles. No birds.
I got a trail cam pic of a deer on a trail in march with snow at the shoulder blade. Hopefully that snow didnt do too much damage on turks. Spent a lot of time driving around this weekend. Only found one group. Luckily its a quarter mile north of one spot we can hunt. Saw them yesterday and today.

I got lucky and scored on one yesterday morning. I started turkey hunting when I was 16. Got one that year with the shotgun and the next year. Put the shotgun away and picked up the bow, wanting a greater challenge. 14 years later I finally bagged one with the bow! Haha. Went to my first spot and listened and didn’t hear squat. Left and went to my grandmas (The SmallChunk) and walked back to my plots and listened before doing some apple tree stuff. Sure as shit one gobbled back in the woods so I ran and grabbed my gear. Popped up the blind and called, boom he gobbled about 100 yards away. Threw up the decoys and crawled in. Didn’t have my chair set up or bow off the sling yet and I could see him bobbing through the woods. Got everything ready and pulled back when he got to 15 yards....and he walked directly out of sight and behind my blind. Didn’t see my decoys from ten yards away.... He proceeded to walk 50-60 yards out to my foodplot and start gobbling. Stupid turkeys always do stupid stuff. I called softly twice (he gobbled back) and proceeded to pick up my phone and started bitching to my friends...all of a sudden I hear footsteps next to the blind, spitting and drumming. Grabbed my bow, pulled back, leaned forward and released at about 8 yards. He went ten yards and face planted! Heck of a fun morning in the woods and the first turkey to be harvested down there in all of the years my grandparents owned it.

Why would you sit in a blind if it’s your Least favorite way to hunt? I never hunted from a blind until I started taking my daughter. Last year we hunted WV and she got a taste of the run and gun. She said she wanted to do more of that this year. She dislocated her kneecap mid March. Surgery was 2 weeks ago and she is on crutches. So I drove her to a blind on Monday and we sat with decoys right where gobblers traveled Saturday. We had a hen come by twice but the boys had other plans. She should be off crutches before the end of season. Not sure if she will have the strength for covering ground.
