I should draw an archery tag for Iowa. I have two points now and will have three for next year. If I don't draw a western tab next year I will probably hunt Iowa. If you have any areas or public land tips I'd love to chat. I do, you could draw this year... text me. I’ll get you on some good stuff.

I’ll be applying in Iowa. Should be shoo-in. I thought I’d draw last year but did not for archery.

I did not get drawn for elk in NM and AZ. I am now going to try Mule deer in AZ. Maybe that will hit.

I cashed my points in Wyoming. Instead of getting a better unit. I split my points to take my dad and his buddy for general archery elk. Dad will be nearly 74 and most likely on his last elk hunt.
Anybody willing to point me in the direction of a honey hole so I can get an old guy on any elk? We will have access to mules so traveling deep is an option.

Well, didn't get drawn on AZ Mule deer. Nothing I applied for got hit. Starting to think I may have to just spend the money every year for land owner tags and fuck these drawings.

That's where big game hunting is in the west. If you change to a Resident of OZ your chances go way up. As a resident you are eligible for 85% of all license, as a non resident its 10%. I'm buying points in OZ but realistically don't think i'll get drawn until I am a resident. Point Creep is real and allot of states where 7 points would get you into a better area now takes 14. I have 9-10 points in 2 states for mule deer and Elk and will eventually get into a good area but not the best areas. The best areas can take 20+ points and are creeping higher so you will never catch those tags. Allot depends on goals, you can have allot of fun hunting without points and still see animals, just not high scoring animals. If you want giants without points it will cost you some serious money. Your a member of HF, go look at their landowner tag section. Depending on what you want they'll start at 5-6K and go straight up, plus guide, license, tips etc. What I have seen is the guide fees from state to state are similar but the tag will cost you based on the animal potential.

I was talking to B11's buddy who lives in Zona and says its getting worse and worse for even the residents to draw. So I asked him if a guy had the money, would it be worth spending the $15K to elk hunt the San Carlos Reservation and get your chance at a 350"-400"+ bull since we are all running out of time with our physical ability? He said he ain't got that kinda money to spend so it don't matter. Well I will give it a couple more years and Then I will start buying landowner tags and hunt with an outfitter for $8K or I will spend the $15-20K and just say fuck it.

I only have one state left I apply in (Utah) and I have 19 points for 2 diff animals.
Elk will get worse in a hurry. Eliminating the feeding grounds will hurt the numbers, and wolves and grizzly are cuddly and we need more of them.

Plan to leave for Wyoming on the 12th. We were close to canceling due to moms health but she is doing much better and insists that dad go. He is 73 so putting off trips is not something he wants to do. We will have one other friend joining us who has mules. So if we kill, the pack will be better than anything I have done before.
We all have either sex tags but dad and I will shoot the first thing that gives us a chance. Our friend might be pickier. He lives in Colorado most of the year and can come back during rifle.

Have a great trip, I wish I was going west this year. I think your taking the right approach, enjoy your dad and shoot an animal. You will be happy harvesting and you will take home allot of great memories. Post picks as you can.

I ended up snagging a leftover elk tag for my dad in our normal CO unit. He's out there now and planning on spending 3 weeks. Has a deer tag as well. I can't stand not being out there with him so I'm driving out Thursday and planning on spending the weekend with him. Hopefully I'll have the opportunity to help him pack one off the mountain. My back is a mess and we just got back from a 10 day jaunt out west with the family. Oh well.

My stuff is packed and sitting in the garage. Dad has a couple hour drive in the morning to get to my place. Then we load up and take off for Wyoming. I should be off the grid sometime Sunday. Hopefully I’ll be posting kill news when we get back to civilization.
You guys be safe as the deer seasons will be opening soon.
Ps Last chance for anyone to give me honey hole info.
