You know how we're told about all these wonderful things that go to deer habitat improvement?
Has anybody ever seen a public deer habitat improvement project?
I'm not talking about buying land, but where they actually did something for the benefit of deer. Local organization projects don't count.

A wma near our farm last weekend they cut down all the trees and had a trackhoe pulling stumps. Did a burn that lost controld and had 3 fire departments there.
Should be a nice area for snakes and mice in the future. What a joke

Seen some pretty badass aspen clear cuts. That's not a deer habitat project, that's a profit task.

What about all the Ditches we plant with legumes, clovers etc. That must be to feed deer so people can see them from the car?

What a joke That's going to happen over a large section of land as they get their paws on it, and it's not even a secret. www.fws.gov/refuge/northern_tallgrass_prairie/about_NWRS.html

As many have said on here, the grasses that end up in these valuable prairies is complete garbage that cant with stand 3 inches of snow. Where are the native grasses at least to replace the trees they are clearing out so there is something for wildlife to try to live in?

Public lands have all sorts of habitat work done on them. Very common to see wheat, milo, and other crops grown by the state just for public hunting. Some of my favorite dove fields are on public land.

Our guys typically hunt their own territory so they make it the best they can. I especially love it when they plant milo in a flat near the river and bring in a gas powered pump to flood it right before teal season.

At least zero I have EVER seen that I recall. They come in and basically wreck it, and leave it for the next millenium untouched. Its really frickin sad. Yay. Bring back a prairie and pretend its awesome with shitty brome grass that does nothing any good.

I wonder what it costed the DNR or USFWS this past week to cut down and dig out all the stumps with a trackhoe, then have to have 3 fire departments come out to keep their fire from getting into a farmstead?

There are tons of food plots left standing for deer, turkeys and pheasants in se Mn in the whitewater wma.
The public properties I hunt in nw wi have periodic timber harvests that provide lots of habitat for grouse and deer. Often times better habitat than private land. I'll say this is less of a habitat improvement than a revenue generating project.
Pheasant areas I hunted for the first time in sw mn last fall had the best habitat around and still held lots of roosters in late December. Some food plots left standing for the birds. But my shooting was piss poor and I didn't bring any home.
There is no doubt there is room for improvement as far as habitat goes, but I'll take that all day long over private property with posted signs that I can't hunt.
