That looks like a nice spot for some apple trees.
I think amending the soil and killing off the sod is a good plan for this year. But I'd still probably try to get one or two potted fleet farm trees in the ground this year just to have a jump start ahead of the main planting next spring. Just make sure they aren't dwarf rootstock trees.

I have tried many times from different sources and they have all failed. I have wolf Rivers but I don’t get the hype on those, they are my slowest growing trees by far. I would add Kerr.

I like Kerr. Liberty came through this winter for me. I am not disagreeing with chummer, just different experiences from different areas.
If you are ordering Franklin from Starks, I would substitute Kinderkrisp for Honeycrisp on that list.
Nothing wrong with good old haralson or haralred, for people or for deer.
Have you talked to Small Chunk?

Liberty has come through multiple winters of -25 and last winter at -38. It is as close to a "sure thing" here as a fruit grower could get.

In your area honker one thing that has ruined many of my crab apple trees has been raccoons. I can't tell you how many branches have been broke from those bastards climbing young trees to eat the fruit. Its why I have a hatred for raccoons. So be aware!

Keepsake is one of the tastiest apples I've eaten, that said...my tree has not been a prolific producer. I'd plant that variety again, but I'd want it on m7 rootstock

Arkansas Black, Liberty, Enterprise, NY Bonkers and Haralson are all great growers for me in the area.

I don't know why you lose what you do, but there is obviously something at work there. I'd think the snow pack would help protect them vs. hurting, but I really don't know. Do you paint all your trunks as far as you can reach?

It sounds like they should. Watch the Skillcult YouTube guy’s videos on frameworking.

Do you paint all your trunks as far as you can reach? Yes, I have had bad luck with chestnut too. I do paint but have lost painted tree as well. I almost think it is the moisture killing the trees. They are in cased in snow so long no air gets to them and they are staying wet for 3 months at a time. The only fool proof trees I have found are dolgo, Kerr, frostbite, and Franklin(been through two winters). All the crabs from SNL are also doing well. I have three chestnuts from SNL that made it through last winter so maybe Cummins sent me the wrong rootstock or trees.

I did some top working this year along with a bunch of rootstocks I had in the ground for 3 years. I did a few chestnut along with native trees. I stuck a chestnut on my Macintosh at home and it has popped a couple inches of growth all ready so hopefully the ones at camp take.
