But still a nice day on the North Shore of Gitchi Gummi. The north Shore is always a sight to see. How far up are you going? Betty's pies is worth the stop. It's not the tiny place it was years ago but the pie is still good.

It was full of people this morning due to the marathon. A badly marked detour in Duluth and the marathon made it a mess.

I love the North Shore. I'm a CA kid, grew up surfing. Little known fact, there are surf spots on the Great Lakes, and people that surf them. I used to be one. Just takes the right wind and a good wetsuit. Not a surf spot, but quite possibly my favorite place on the North Shore is "Iona's Beach".

Pretty sure it's just around the corner to the left of where you were standing when you took the shot of the little safe harbor jetty, if that is where I think it is. Up and over the bluff that's just out of frame left. That picture looks like "twin points" to me. I surfed there a few times in the Fall, years ago. Otherwise - here. goo.gl/maps/GCm85c5asuEV5XJj8

I didn't have AC after highschool until I moved to SF. When I lived in Duluth, you really didn't need it if you lived below the hill. But there were always about 2 weeks you wish you had it. One year when that hit, I was so miserable I bought some snorkeling gear and went up to Two Harbors to try a beach there. I had a rock hunter phase and I was searching below the water for agates. I almost didn't make it outta the water due to the cold. All I found was a car key.

I used to hunt agates too. Went through a phase where I was bumming around up there. I bumbled around that place, a lot. I'd sleep in a van, surf during the day. There are actually better surfing waves up there than you'd think. BUT, the duration of the clean surf is very short. It's very cold, as you know, especially in the Fall and Winter when there is good surf. We'd be in the water with ice, fairly regularly. This is a past life. Here's a picture I took right before paddling out alone at a semi-secret spot, a long time ago. For reference, the waves you see breaking cleanly on the inside were about chest high.

What do you do with agates?

What do you do with agates? Polish 'em and put them in a vase on your coffee table. If you have enough, you put them on the lake bottom of your walleye mount see through coffee table. Some people throw them in their landscaping. I have the vase.

I used To fish the St. Louis river before it dumps into superior. Walleye were numerous and easy.
