You will be happy with your variety there! One i'm excited to watch as it grows is Galarina. I've heard good things from it as a deer apple, and it's been a good grower out in the planter. Do you have Florina Querina? I was looking at my grafting list's from years prior when making the tree tags and noticed that I tried grafting it in '17. It was a failure, but I have heard good things from that one too!

I tried grafting it awhile back and winter got them (think it was that wicked winter where waterlines were freezing all over the state...'14?).

Started the orchard today... Post is temporary (forgot some stuff) !! Fun Looks good! Your rows seem to be straight (which is a different look than mine!). I may have missed it but what was the final verdict, how many trees per acre?

I planted some Franklins on B118 rootstock in 2017 and two of the trees produced fruit last fall. I thought I pulled off all of the fruit early in the growing season, but I missed a couple. Based on that really small number of apples they appear to have a long dropping window. I'm interested to see how they do over the next few years. I will say though that the trees have an above average growth rate and the branch angles are naturally pretty good. Turkey Creek Trees had a few Franklins but I didn't even notice until I finalized my order. Next year! Then he must’ve bought licensing/royalties in order to sell it as it’s a patented tree.

I think I have 22 on .55ish acres. Looks like I'm spacing them too wide... or crooked planting takes up more space.

How do you officially patent a tree, and have some of the guys on here ever thought of it? Like Art/Stu? You must have a winner in there ?

Which tree would be your standout? Both Buckman Crab and Big Dog have done well for winter feeding of deer.

I joke but some day I would like to patent my Centerfield Tree. For no reason other than I think it would be neat. I have a few of them growing now but I should probably see if the apples are worth anything other than for deer. I will grab some pics of my Franklins. I think they are going on 3 maybe 4th leaf. They are a good looking clean tree. Hoping for some apples this year.

You must have a winner in there ? I've thought about it too, but really have no desire to make money off an apple tree. Club apples piss me off, so I don't want to restrict anybody's access to any trees I ever "come up with". The only tree I have that is at all "remarkable" so far is Smitty's Seedling. I've sent scions to a few folks around the country and am waiting to hear what they think about growing/eating the apples.

I think there are lots of great deer apples that are seedlings. We just have to look for them.
Even a few would be great for people.
My goal has been to provide apples for deer for as long as period as possible. I feel deer in this area prefer smaller apples like crabs. I also feel crabs can do ok with slightly poorer soils and slightly lower pH. The crabs need less care...
All of these comments refer to my location. Other climates/soils could be different.
