What is the proper recipe?
Sugar muddled with bitters, Brandy and cherry juice?
I.e.no soda /pop in a proper old fashioned?

I don't know if it's proper but we always include an orange slice and 7up in addition to what you listed.

Not a brandy guy but here's what I use for whiskey.
2 parts Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel ¾ parts simple syrup couple dashes of bitters INSTRUCTIONS Put into rocks glass. Muddle orange. Add ice and stir
Te original calls for a orange slice but I hate oranges.

Now you are talking my language.
One cube of sugar. Add 3-5 splashes of bitters. Muddle. Add a little 7-up[(sweet) or Squirt (sour). Mix. Add ice. Brandy (or whiskey). Again 7up or squirt. Add Garnish. Relax.
I like mixing with Aritsticat Brandy as it is a really good mixing brandy and isn't too expensive.

I've tried this in other parts of the country just to experiment.
Most of the time this is the look you get.
If you do get it, they suck.

The Texas establishment I was at last night had no brandy on hand..but apparently had bitters because they asked if I wanted whisky(I think...memory is a little hazy on details ) instead

The best Old Fashioneds I've ever had were at Marty's Place North, Hwy 51 just north of Woodruff. They bill themselves as the birthplace of the drink. I have no idea if they are, but they certainly know how to make a killer version.

Heartbreakers in Antigo has great French Onion Soup and great old fashions. Prime rib isn't bad either. Can't beat that combination.

I forget what the exact statistic is but I've read that Wisconsin consumes like 30% of all brandy in the world or something like that.
Edit: I was close. Found this
"Wisconsin is our number one state," says Margie Healy, director of public relations for the California-based Korbel. "We export 385,000 cases a year, and 139,000 go directly to Wisconsin. That's one-third of our total production."

WI is a "brandy state" for sure. Personally, I'm not a brandy guy. I'll have an Old Fashioned or few while I'm in WI, but I don't really crave or miss them.
Nothing like an Old Fashioned while sitting in an "up north" WI supper club looking out towards the lake/woods though...most everything seems to taste better in such a setting.

This sounds like a strip joint.
