Anybody else been out for early goose this year? MO, did I see that you sold your stuff? Opening weekend started off slow with barely getting on fields. Hunted a loaf on Sunday and ended up with 18. Hunted a wheat field on Monday and ended up with our 25. This weekend we tried hunting the same wheat field on Saturday without wind. We should have crushed them but couldn’t get them to commit fully. Ended up with only eleven. This morning we got on a oat field from this spring that they had planted alfalfa in and cut about two weeks ago. Lots of birds in the area but with it being so short of a hide and these birds being hunted for two weekends, it was tough. Ended up grinding to get our 25 again, with one being banded. We have been very lucky with a lot of birds in the area this year. Man has it been a fun time out there with the buddies. We are lucky to know people that really like goose and we have some good jerky recipes. One of the guys made creamy goose soup for all of us the other night and it actually wasn’t bad!

Whereabouts are you hunting? I live in lax and have access to land prob 5-8 miles from the Mississippi and I’ve always wanted to try hunting them in a field but it doesn’t seem they come by too too often

I've always heard duck hunting is killer down there and I love fishing the river in that area for bass!

I love the dogs in bird hunting photos. Your's looks proud. It's like they know what's up at the moment. Not sure they understand what a photograph is. But I think they understand the ritual somehow.
edit - Your son too!

What is your hen limit up north? Hunting this early can be hard to tell mallards apart.

What is your hen limit up north? Hunting this early can be hard to tell mallards apart. We can shoot 6 ducks a person, with only 4 of them being Mallards and 2 of the Mallards being hens. There are times when you legit drop one thinking drake, walk up to it, think hen, and then come to the conclusion that it is a young drake once you closely examine it. Very tough up here early in the year. That's a low spot in a bean field. It was dynamite from 2009-2013. They added drain tile and it was dry for two years. Something must've plugged it or the exit is blocked, cuz the last 3 or so years have been good again. I missed out last year on a late season mallard stomp down out there in the snow of a 7 man limit. I guess they were just piling in there, but there was standing corn with water in it.
