I used Mergansers for dog training on my old dog. She hated them. The look of disgust on her face caused me to never shoot one again.

Never eaten swan, but I tried merganzer once... why are you guys shooting those nasty things? If it flies it dies. Tough to identify birds doing Mach 1 at first light. I’ve eaten hooded merganser mixed in with other ducks. Couldn’t pick out the merg. Bufflehead is another story.

Do you like Bufflehead or no? The only duck I’ve ate that tasted like fish. Absolute fish. I think I shot one out there last week.

Never had merganser, but Grandpa told me when he was a kid his mom cooked some in the house and he said the house stunk for days..... that was enough wisdom for me.

Many moons ago, my duck bud and I were on Crane Lake south of Clitherall. No public access. cattail island in the dead center of the lake. Incredible diver hunts for years in late Oct, up to deer opener.
We drug our dads out there for the first time I think that day. Brian and I in one boat, Dad and Brians dad in the other boat about 20 or 30 yds down from from us in their set.
Here comes 6 ducks, doing a fly by, left to right about 10 yds off the water going mach 2....... Brian and I whacked away. It was so awesome. We shot 3 shots each and were staggered perfect. bang, bang..... bang, bang.... bang, bang. Just that slight pause between every shot. We dropped all 6. Our dads were over there cheering and biching because we didnt let any of them get to them. NEVER did a 6 shot, 6 dead duck diver shoot EVER before or ever again,,,,, I am pretty sure. Lots of holes in the skies over the years on diver ducks. Goddamn most fun to shoot of ANY ducks!
Well, it was 6 hooded mergansers...... To that point, if I recall, we had NEVER shot a hoodie in our lives prior to that. Here we thought we mashed 6 bluebills or ringbills because that was the ducks we mainly shot for years to that point on this spot. God that was cool.

Goddamn I love duck hunting..... Grrrr. I miss that more than anything! I would trade deer getting CWD if I could get consistent good to great duck hunting like we had 25 years ago!
Well, thats a stretch, but I really miss good duck hunts.

That’s great BLB!
I shot lots of holes in the sky last week. Some of the bigger diver groups came in doing Mach 2 with their wings set. Sounded like fighter planes. Didn’t even pick up the gun on those. Out of the zone in no time. Impressive to see and hear though.

Well, thats a stretch, but I really miss good duck hunts. Our North Dakota hunt was terrible by their standards. I hope to get back next year and see what a good week is like. The variety of ducks is what I enjoy as well. Much like Arkansas.

OH SHIT!.... well, when I was 11 I didnt say that, but now I know my brain would have loved to have said that. Grab the gun and before you know it,,,, cup, swing, GONE! Why didnt we shoot? You have no idea how many times we uttered those words in the blind! It happens so fast, you cant process it and react. Another best hunt ever on divers(bluebills). St Paul Pass on Upper Lightning Lake south of Fergus Falls, MN. Brian and I witnessed the most impressive bluebill migration I ever saw. Limits were 3 bluebills each at that time I think. We had our 3 each in 20 or 30 minutes. We sat there for a few hours and watched after. It was flocks of hundreds and I mean every few minutes or less. yds off the water, and would get to that point we were hunting on and blow your hats off. I have never seen anything like it before or after. We went to Elbow Lake and found a pay phone and I called my Dad at work. I told him, Call Brians Dad and get up here tonight. you wont believe the ducks!. Dad and Brians Dad got the next day off work(which was a Friday) and got up there. We sent them out to the spot to hunt Friday morning...... There were hardly any ducks at all! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. They shot some ducks, but didnt see hardly any bluebills. The funniest part was those 2 retards came back to the cabin and took the ducks out they shot.... they had a canvasback, which were illegal to shoot then..... "Are you sure its not a redhead??" No Dad... Thats a Can..... Ah, the duck memories

Two were males with red heads. Limit for redheads was none. Females didn’t have a red head.

My Dad wore through the keel on an aluminum boat from braking ice to duck hunt. He would bust it open and set decoys.
