I just got back from a week at our seasonal event up on Kabetogama. Mainly fished Kab, but did spend a day on Namakan. Found my best luck on walleyes in 25-30 ft as fish are starting to school up in deeper water. I would not hesitate to fish down to 40 plus ft though if you find a big group. Water temps were still in the low 60s, so the crappies are just starting to school up. They were very scattered when we were there. When the water temps get in the mid 50s, they will move in the holes & bays and drive big schools of baitfish toward the surface. Think clouds/Christmas trees on your electronics. Find that, and you will catch crappies. Kab has always been more consistent for craps for me, cause that’s what I know best. As far as presentations, all you will need for walleyes and crappies are jigs. 1/8oz to 3/8oz depending on depth. 1/8 to fish suspended crappies, and 1/4 or 3/8 to drag for walleyes. Minnows for everything, and it doesn’t matter what flavor. I use the cheap chubs or rainbows. I could give you a laundry list of spots to try on Kab, but on Namakan it’s gonna have to be a search & destroy mission for you guys.

Very helpful, hope to catch a bunch of both walleye and crappie. Thank you!!

25 foot drop off areas? Points? Catch any shallow? They are tight lipped about crappie locations, but we found them spread out in about 25 ft. Traditionally, as temps drop, they and their prey end up concentrated in the deeper holes. Most we catch are schooled and suspended about 18-25 ft down over 30+ feet of water. You’ll see the clouds of fish & prey when you drive over them. Almost all of our walleyes came from 25-30ft. Most were relating to rock reefs or shoreline point that reached out into deeper water. Sometimes they were up to 50 yards off those structures and scattered around on sand or rock flats. Don’t be afraid to widen your search. I never drop a line until I mark several fish on my electronics. I also tried several of my shallow water spots with no success. Shallowest spot I found any fish feeding was 21ft.

That's a chunky walleye, that's awesome. How did you find where they were biting?

We fished close to cabin first day. Tried the 17-28 foot areas, marked fish. Caught a Mix of walleye and crappie, with a few perch and sauger.
Today we will go explore the bigger lakes, the amount of water up here is amazing.
Good tips from Satchmo, the depths are consistent.

Any plans to cast for some northern? Northerns in shallow bays we're always something I looked forward to.
