Definitely use diesel or some kind of penetrant if you don't spray immediately after cutting

I've read that you need to spray glyphosate within a few hours for it to be effective. If you spray days later, I'd definitely go with crossbow and diesel

we cut some off years ago, and the exploded with multiple trunks growing out of the stump.
They got zapped with crossbow a couple years ago and are toast now.

Does crossbow / diesel need to be applied in the winter? I’ve been spraying autumn olive and sweetgum winter into spring. The olive seems to die no matter when I spray it. The gum is hanging on but maybe showing signs of sickness.
It’s sometimes hard for me to ID plants without their leaves. I found a new patch of olive last weekend and plan to nuke it this weekend.

I don't know about crossbow, but I apply triclopyr / diesel all year and it works great.

I've sprayed diesel/crossbow most months of the year. I would avoid spring when sap is rising. I read some research a while ago that said some species are best sprayed in late summer/early fall.

I just put some triclor on some box elder stump sprouts. Maybe I should have waited. It is a big stump and had some doses and roundup before. Not as many sprouts as before.

Just found this forum and happy to see some familiar faces from H-T and some other 'Sotas. I'm through page 12 on this thread thus far.
My house sits on 6 acres of timber in Wright county, we bought in 2020 and the woods were almost entirely a mature buckthorn jungle. All the desirables were getting choked out and there was nothing in the understory but buckthorn. We hired out a guy with a forestry mulcher last spring to come out and turn it all to wood chips. I hammered the stump sprouts and new growth with foliar applications of Triclopyr last summer/fall. Right now in spots it looks like a lawn of buckthorn sprouts trying to emerge from the years of seedbank. It'll be a battle for a few years until the seedbank is killed out but I think we'll be able to manage at home.
The DNR approved a cost share for the mechanical "removal" last year and the forester is coming out to inspect this morning. I think they are paying $1500 for about 5 acres of work. The forestry mulcher work ran us $7k last spring. They also approved a cost share for stump or basal bark treating the mature buckthorn on 6 acres of my Kanabec county property and I need to get going on that. That 6 acre cost share was worth $800 i believe so less than the mechanical removal which i'm not sure will be as effective.
I had the idea that it would be open enough for me just to cover the new growth largely with an ATV sprayer after the mulcher came through. If I had to do it over, I think I might have preferred basal spraying everything a while before having it mulched. I am concerned that just carpeting everything with foliar applications of triclopyr could hurt the roots of what desirables I have left.
Anyways, look forward to reading pages 12-35 when I get a chance.

Yesterday when I was checking on this year's apple top-works, I noticed some brush/trees growing around them I didn't get sprayed last winter. I also noticed some buckthorn that I had missed. So, today I mixed up a couple gallons of Crossbow/diesel and hit it. I'll say this, it's a lot more enjoyable basal spraying in the late fall/winter than it is in July.
