My north neighbor stopped last night to ask permission to look for a gut shot buck today. Apparently they blew a leg off and then administered the finishing shot to the guts  I told them to go ahead. It headed for one of the thickest, nastiest hinge cut areas on my place. They'll be lucky to find it, much less get it out of there. They apparently shot this ^^^buck and another 8 pointer. From their description, the two 8's they shot were the two 8's that walked under my stand about a week ago. I guess all a guy can do is let them go and hope they survive. Those two didn't. |

Stu— that stinks Friend of mine checked his camera this morning... look close the buck has a slug wound/blood on his front end.He said the neighbors shot at it, but thought they missed yesterday.  |

Well, that sucked balls. Neighbor texted they were going in at 11 so I ran back out to watch from my box blind. 3 came in following blood, only one had a gun (good call on their part). They lost blood early on then started grid searching. About 150 yards into my major bedding area I had to text them to stop. They bumped a few deer out and I knew my afternoon hunt was already fucked. I didn't want them to ruin the rest of the week wandering all over. Told them to check the creek bottom on the way back out. Bingo...there the buck was. Alive and well with a broken front leg. I threw a slug at him around 150 yards away knowing full well it was prayer. He crossed back to the neighbor's place, so at least there's that. Oh yeah...I scoped my nose. Fucking brilliant. I may not go back out today.

That's not good, are you bleeding much? Letting people on is a problem as you immediately lose control of where they go, tough call. Lots of time to hunt, it will get better once the weekenders are gone.

Daily low dose aspirin keeps that blood thin and flowing  Not a big deal, just dumb on my part. The north neighbors are good folks, just kind of clueless on habitat things. They listened when I asked them to stop and didn't give me an ounce of shit. I talked to them on my way back in, they thanked me for letting them go in there as they knew it was an off limits area (even for me). I try to be a good neighbor when the neighbors are also good. Someday I may need to wander around on their place. That's the second time I've scoped myself with my slug gun in 10 years. I don't think the scope has enough eye relief. I think I'm going to go to Osakis and see if they'll give me a decent trade in value and pick up a Savage 220 with a better scope. |

Ever consider an agreement to only search for wounded deer after dark? Most deer in neighboring fields and no risk of pushing local herd to hungry neighbors in light of day?

I don't think there is any way humanly possible to look for a deer in my hinged areas when it's dark. Pretty much impossible when it's light. This is the first time in 8 years that there's been any issues. If it becomes a frequent thing, then I'll have to consider alternative solutions (like an 8' fence) |

letting the neighbors blood trail on your land was the right call. It sounds like they appreciate it and would do the same to you. If you put too many restrictions on trailing they may say screw it and just kill another buck instead of tracking the one they wounded.
Lots of variables there and idiot neighbors would be the exception. It doesn't sound like that's the case here though. So it sounds like they didn't get a second bullet in the deer like they thought?

It sure didn't look like it. Any deer that's been gut shot with a firearm should have been dead or really close to it after more than 12 hours I'd think. They did things the right way as far as letting it sit as long as they did. Still pretty much sick about fucking up my bedding area, but there are much worse things in life.
