Foggy has entered the first year of possible prime after logging and is as quiet as Badbrad was post wedding. I am done waiting for updates. Let’s speculate.

Actually I was so busy with family that I have not had too much time to spend on the webs. My grandson took a doe after seeing about a dozen of them.....and my SIL took a spike buck (almost a nubbin) to round out our meat pole. I have seen exactly 1 doe at near dark.....and I am done hunting. I KNOW we have allot of deer in the neighborhood.....but we did not see them during legal hours. Very little shooting in our area.....and very few deer were taken. Not sure why.....I suppose I could say it was windy or no snow or too cold....etc.......but I don't understand it. My food plots are nearly eaten to the dirt....and the area does not hold much attraction if I dont have food. (thinking I gotta go to corn next year....shudder). My season is over. We got two deer for four of us.....coulda shot a few more but were not pigs........but the hunt was not great. I was in our best stand tonight.....and did not see a thing. No great bucks came thru. Some of my family and a neighbor will hunt a few more days this year on my land. Nothing memorable happened. As I like to say: "They can't all be block-busters". I'm headed for airzona on Thursday.....and will be hunting coyotes in the desert next week....and playing golf. FORE!

I think the next 5-8 years your place will really come together, I'd guess the best hunting years are just ahead of you thanks to the logging and regen.

I kept making improvements and selling because it was not good enough. I stayed in touch and those places I sold are kicking out lots of deer now - but still not what I needed to say it met my goals. The fence has satisfied my deer itch for now. Sounds like my offer on the Mille Lacs piece has been accepted but the plan is different this time. Timber money, couple food plots and trails and sell to a dreamer.

I've always been a "waiter" probably because I could never afford to be a "right now" kinda guy. I've also always enjoyed the experience of building habitat on my own. Nobody to blame or give credit to...besides me. I know you're a "right now" guy. The problem with right now deer properties is that they're expensive. If I were to sell now, I'd be asking for 2 times per acre what I paid. I probably wouldn't get it, but it may come close.

My real problem is I experienced way too much good hunting, and I no longer want to travel for it. I wanted that experience an hour from home, and discovered its not possible in the state of Minnesota. I gave it a go and finally decided to quit trying. I am good with that.
There may come a time when the kids leave home that I can relocate to somewhere and try again. I have seen some killer places in Colorado that have deer, ducks, pheasant, antelope, turkey and elk all in the same ranch. But I really think for me it will always be better under fence.

I am a waiter also, as long as a local manager doesn’t push our deer herd to near zero. I mostly hunt two pieces of property. One I have hunted for over 50 years and the other for over 30 years. I understand you guys that flip property, but you miss the connection with the land. Some of us want that, some don’t. I doubt I will ever have it any better than what I have got now. Sometimes wish I had started in OTC thirty years ago and lived there the whole time. Still, big bucks aren’t everything and there are a few decent deer where I live. I can walk 50 yards across my yard and get in a heated box blind where I have a chance of seeing a deer.

I hear you, but just to be clear...it won't be the DNR pushing the herd to zero, it will be the hunters. The DNR only enables meat pigs to rape the resource, they don't do the actual raping. Unless the DNR brings in sharpshooters, there will be nobody to blame for low deer numbers besides deer hunters.

This year was a bit of a bust......but there are deer around the hood. I had to be in OZ for our house build, so I didn't enjoy much of the "pre-hunt" as other years and no archery hunts. I have less desire to hunt each year....especially if it's cold out. I still like managing the land and the food plots....and it's fun to play with my 'chinery at times. I think I will most likely die owning my land.....not so much that I want it for myself anymore.....but I want my family to continue to hunt deer and have a place to do so. They like it.....and it's become a nice annual gathering for us.

Timber money, couple food plots and trails and sell to a dreamer. This is where I'm getting. I have owned my place for 9 years and in that time I have killed 6 ten point bucks. I'm killing what I have but I want bigger bucks. I enjoy managing the property but my area does not regularly produce bucks over 130. Most are 115-130, my best is 143 but I want 150-170. I won't sell the current place as my wife loves it and I am currently financially restricted by my OZ investment so a new place will take awhile. So in the short run I need to either wait, go guided or network into opportunities. Bottom line I want to shoot bigger bucks so I will travel to ware I can find opportunities. A new farm, maybe, if I could buy it right but that won't be for awhile. In the end me and allot of us are lucky to have the opportunities we have.
