Got this from a friend with property in Clearwater.
he has a border problem.
Having a problem in CW with the neighbor who lets a buddy and his kid hunt on his 10 acres. Of course he has the stands set up on the fence line and if they shoot something they have nowhere to go except to our property. The kid shot a nice 9 last year and Dave helped them find it on our property. Friday the guy calls me and tells me the kid shot a shooter and it jumped the fence on my side and they found some blood. I gave him permission to go no further than 100 yards in to look for it. Said if they couldn’t find it within a 100 yards the kid needs to practice his shooting skills and if they didn’t find it I told them they had to wait until someone in our party was with them. Dave helped and they found a little blood but not much. Saturday morning I told the guy to meet my nephew at 10;30 and they still didn’t find it. That’s two years in a row. Happens again next year I am going to go to the neighbor who lets him hunt there to let him know that if the guy doesn’t stop hunting I am going to have the ugliest ass 12 foot plywood fence erected along the property line that the guy is going to have to see every time he looks out of his picture window.

KS is kind of weird when it comes to baiting (maybe, maybe not). I know lots of people who feel baiting is beneath them and advocate it should be outlawed. Everyone who baits is a cheater, very emotional. But, the pallets of corn at Walmart are constantly sold out and old bags litter the highways this time of yr. Outfitters buy it by the ton.
I've always felt that as long as it's legal then everyone has an equal playing field, same rules to work with type of thing. If you're upset the neighbor is baiting (and it's legal) then you can throw your own pile out and equal the situation. If you don't want to then that's your choice to deal with. Corn, foodplots, water holes, mock scrapes, decoys, hunting doe bedding area's... it's all the same in a way... ways to kill a deer that isn't just completely random. The neighbor north of me put out a giant feed that he keeps full year round. Hasn't changed how I hunt one bit. I certainly could counter his move but I don't have the motivation. With that said I really wouldn't mind if KS made baiting illegal but I would mind if foodplots were outlawed. I like working plots to much and am selfish with wanting what I want.

No way to for sure keep some bucks at home. But the older some bucks get, and if you stay the fuck off your property, I have seen them shrink to a 20 acre area as long as it has cover food and water.

I agree with you on that. We have seen 2 bucks in particular that were 4 years old (we think) that stayed on our 40 and 52 acres for a good portion of the time. We end up getting both bucks. Rare though. In both cases they would bed in our sanctuary and we did stay out of it. |

Baiting and food plots are used for the exact same reasons. They are in place to accomplish the exact same goal. The older I get, the more I agree with this. It really isn't disputable Can be Similar but not the exact same reason or result. I think allot of plotters are trying to grow healthy deer not just kill a good deer. Plots provide food to deer over a distributed area and distributed time. This results in providing a deer herd a healthy food source over time generally benefiting the overall health of the herd. Plots also concentrate deer near an area (depending on plot size) during a 24 hour period. Many plots are large enough that depending on where the deer access the plot it limits a hunters ability to kill that deer. Bait piles are put on specific spots vs an area for plots. Baiting can be timed to be available during a very narrow time period while plots cannot. Baiting lures deer to a specific spot within a hunter kill area at a specific time while plots lure deer to a general area within a 24 hour period. In my opinion food plotters chase deer within a general area and hope to find deer near them during daylight hours. Baiters don't chase deer they lure deer into a narrow trapped area within a specific time-frame (Daylight) to kill them. Yes similar reasons but significant enough to warrant why baiting is not fair chase and should not be legal. |

You want healthy deer you feed pellets. Optimal nutrition year round, they dont eat what has been pissed and shit on, dewormer added couple times a year, permethrin added to stations to control ticks mosquitoes and flies. Baiting give you a healthier deer herd.

Trust me though, even at 60, I will still drive 400 miles to get my cane polished. So they can and will still move during the rut. Key is to try and kill them before it kicks in. |

Baiting will likely never be legal in MN and it likely will be banned entirely in WI shortly since as CWD spreads baiting is being banned in more counties every year. It's been debated a million times here, but a pile of corn in thick cover is 10X more effective than a small kill plot since the bait pile gets the deer exactly where you want them and it can't be overbrowsed. Baiting destroys daytime movement on neighboring properties - it's legal in WI in my county and my neighbors all bait. If they can bait regularly and you can't, they win regardless of any habitat improvements you do or food plots you plant.
That said, I have no issues with people baiting in areas where it is legal but I wouldn't want any expansion in baiting into areas it currently isn't allowed.
If it's legal I believe baiting in the center of your property is a good way to get deer to spend more time on your land, making them less likely to be killed by neighbors.

Corn piles are done everywhere, legal or not. Big bucks during the rut do not stand by a corn pile all day every day. They can be killed. Yes its a bitch knowing your neighbor is doing it. But you can still kill deer. The worst of baiting is in the end of dec when you can draw in big bucks from 10 miles around. That is when you really want to bait if you are into that. Same as leaving a large soybean field like we do from time to time, just the corn poured on the ground ain't legal.

Baiting give you a healthier deer herd. You are confusing baiting and feeding. Baiting might give a temporary boost in nutrition or a case of acidosis if overdone. Feeding is long term . I agree with a boost in nutrition if done properly. Let’s not confuse baiting and feeding. |

I grew up with laws saying baiting for deer is illegal. Salt and mineral is Ok.
Baiting for bear is fine with me.
I can’t explain it other than what has been defined as fair chase or not in my background.
Foodplots and apple trees are fine.
