A L Shaped 5-10 row screen on public land near roads, and/or by a cattail swamp on every public parcel would be a huge upgrade. Drill in a nice pocket of switchgrass/tall natives behind it, and it would greatly enhance the survival of deer, turkey and pheasant. It would also make these public areas more attractive to hunt. This is public in farm country I am talking about. The problem comes when the duck guys push the grass only agenda. When much of the money is from duck stamps, they do not want this, so they get cut down. One issue with our public is, the actual hunters have very little say and the highest and best use is never considered. When we did our CRP, we had the choice of trees or grasses. We wanted cover, so went trees. the USFWS guy we worked with was almost to the point of pissed when he found out. He made some snide comment regarding no ducks will use this. Ducks are the primary carrier of Influenza A, or H5N1. MN is the #1 poultry producer in the US. Tyson needs to fight back against this. We're gambling with disaster by trying to host ducks.

That joint in CO needs to add to their task list to develop duck strains that cannot host H5N1.
