My first bird of the season was a black. My swamp spot is loaded with blacks these days. 15-20 years ago the swamp had mostly mallards and we had to try to pic out a black. Now days it seems like it is 95% black ducks so we focus on the mallards when they come in together. Black ducks are mostly an eastern bird. Do any other duck hunters here get to shoot blacks? They are an important bonus bird around here when you are trying to kill 6 ducks with a 4 mallard limit. I’m guessing you don’t get them in WI, MN or KS.

When trying to ID them on the wing, look for dark body with silver under the wings.

Hunted a corn field this morning. Since I have not cleaned my duck gun in two years I had some debris jam up my trigger. I had do so some field cleaning to get it to fire Managed 5 geese and 1 mallard while hunting with 1 friend. If my gun hadn’t messed up we definitely would have limit of 6 geese with about that many ducks. It was a good morning in the blind. Most of you talk about ice fishing and January is when duck hunting gets good here.

Nope on the black ducks, never seen one. I did shoot the first surf scooter in the county though. May still be the only one, haven't checked for a while.

I never would have thought a black duck would be in AZ.
The black limit was 1 for a lot of years. We went to 2 last year. Kinda sucks because some days on the swamp it’s the only species we see. They tend to stay on small rivers and secluded swamps. You won’t see them in the parks with mallards. We do shoot some in corn fields flying with mallard groups.
I killed an old squaw in Southern Ohio about 20 years ago when I started hunting ducks. I didn’t realize how rare that was at the time.

We've got quite a variety of ducks down here with a sprinkled in goose once in a blue moon. We've shot pintails, canvasbacks, redheads, widgeons, skaup, wood duck, ringneck, and a few others i can't remember.

We used to get very occasional black ducks. At one time, they were more common in Extreme NE Mn.

Ducks. I've never hunted them. I think this season I may buy the tags and take my shotgun back to the old beaver ponds and see if I can jump shoot a couple.

A few hunters will kill a black duck occasionally down here in MS but they are rare. I’ve never killed one.

If I remember correctly we shot 2 black ducks in one day in Western MN. We also get an occasional Pintail in MN. I have not duck hunted for 10 years though.
