I had a fun day of Christian Fellowship and painting of spear fishing decoys in northern Minnesota . My buddy made 30 decoys, his wife made lunch, and people of all ages came to paint and to continue the old tradition of decoy making.

My buddy explained the process of winter spear fishing with the help of a Les Kouba print. live sucker minnows weren’t available until after the 1960’s in many areas. Fisherman whittled and painted wooden decoys for their winter fishing.

Pretty cool. Wonder who and how figured red/white was best? Probably trial and error. Red/ white daredevils were common. Most rural farms or northwoods homes probably had white paint and barn red paint available. In those days, you didn’t drive to town, but just used what you had.

That's cool. I didn't realize spearing was that popular. It looks like a lot of fun. Do you make your own decoys?
My father in law just retired and has been spearing a bunch of pike near lake city this winter. I assumed he just needed an excuse to get out of the house, but he has been sending me pics of dead pike, so he is actually killing some. He uses a decoy and also a live sucker minnow. He also had another pole out for crappies, so he catches a few of them too. I have no idea what the rules are, but it looks like a lot of fun.

I have made some in the past and carry them in my decoy box.

Ben, I like to run both a sucker and a decoy. Suckers are getting hard to get.
