I went out a bit ago and spread 15-20 lbs. of a clover/chicory mix on my north forest opening (I'm going to start calling them that instead of foodplots ). I pulled up in the Ranger, unloaded seeder/seeds and got walking. Looked up and a big old doe is just staring at me, maybe 20 yards away. I kept walking towards her and she just froze, got within 10 yards before she finally took off. She must have had no idea what the hell I was. edit...oh yeah, I also seeded 10 lbs. of delar small burnet on the sandy areas of the forest openings. Probably a waste of seed, but I had it and it wasn't gonna grow in the container in the shed.

I sprayed a couple of small clover chicory plots that I planted last year, on Monday with IMOX will see how well that works, looking pretty thin will have to add some more seed I think Hey Lee, I don't remember if you ever reported how the IMOX did for you? I just ordered a quart along with the recommended Nitro-Surf nitrogren/surfactant.

It really hasnt been great from what I can tell. altough I think I have been spraying when the plants have been to tall, hope to try again next week. and I never used the nitrosurf either, So Im hoping that doing it correctly will get better results.

That's not awesome news. From what I've read on the interwebs, the Nitrosurf is very important so maybe that will make a difference.

I've heard of different rates being used that could be one of my problems as well

I've heard of different rates being used that could be one of my problems as well I've got to research the Nitrosurf rate. Seems like 6-8 oz. per acre of IMOX is the accepted rate for terrestrial applications. edit...looks like 3-4 pints/acre of Nitrosurf is the recommended rate.

Just sprayed about an acre of weedy clover/alfalfa plot on the neighbor's. Hit it with 6 oz. IMOX, 3 pints Nitrosurf, 1.5 pints of Basagran, and 6 oz. of surfactant (probably/maybe not needed due to the Nitrosurf).
I have visions of a nice clean plot by mid June. I'm probably kidding myself...

I'd like to kill that grass but do not want to lose the rye at this point......gotta come up with a plan. Likely will leave that plot to let the rye mature.....and then nuke the rye and grass and crimp the rye to lay it down.....then plant a fall mix. Not sure there is another way for me at this point. Not aware of a chem that is selective enough to kill grasses and not kill cereal rye. Anyone? It's a relatively small problem as most of my other plots are pretty good and getting some great growth on the rye now.

That is one thing about the "buffalo system"......is that what happens when you get chocked down by Johnson grass (for example) ? Start over....or live with it and keep showing "good seeds" into a problem area. One of those things not many folks talk about. Grin. My cereal rye is now really starting to put on some growth. Roller Crimper delivers on Friday. Anxious to plant "summer release" blend and some buckwheat. Reworking my drill for a bit better performance with small seeds. I think I stumbled onto a good means to make the drill perform better in this area. Good challenge. Active bunch of Tar River owners on another site and on Facebook. Folks are finding solutions to make these drills work better.

Folks are finding solutions to make these drills work better. The neighbor and I have been doing this on the plot I sprayed this morning. We've probably put close to 40 lbs. of various clovers down over the last 3-4 years. He's thrown some rye and oats out there a few times as well. There's plenty of clover out there, but there's also a shit ton of weeds. If this spraying knocks the weeds back for a year and allows more of the clover to take over it will be worth it.

Every system has it’s glitches, till, no till, or low till. Farmers battle it every year and start to identify trends that usually work. Until we get different weather or a new weed that takes advantage of the current system. I haven’t looked to see how bad nutsedge is in the foodplots this spring. My neighbor has worked to reduce it. I see it or something very similar in areas that haven’t been tilled in 30 + years. Perhaps the foodplots won’t get planted this year, or will just be beans, turnips, and radishes, who knows what that will do for the nutsedge.
