I never figured I would get any Gov't. money.....and I won't. For a few years now I have contributed all of my IRA (required) disbursements to some charity operations of my choices. Many needy places for money to go. If I don't take receipt of these funds....then I can "donate" 100% of MY IRA saved money to these charities of my choice....instead of a lesser amount....based on your tax bracket. In my case that becomes about a 50% better benefit to the organizations instead of me getting to use my money as I see fit....and living a higher lifestyle. I live pretty good...... So....I have done this....without reserve. 100% of my (hard earned) IRA is going to charity. I'd rather not contribute to Planned Pwrrenthood.....or the DNC.....just saying.
Now.....many of these not-for-profit organizations are again especially in need.....and are now asking me for an early payment of my IRA money. OK....I'm gonna step up. Makes sense.....I believe!
Used to be....that I would scrimp and save so that my family would one-day have a few cents to our name.....and be able to eat or live a somewhat reasonable life in retirement. I should not grumble......as my efforts have paid off......but I did pay a high price so that I could now donate to these causes. It could have worked out the other way.......as many of us well know. Life is a gamble....
Interesting to now measure my emotions about giving to these causes......that never provided for me or mine. Maybe I should count my bleessings (and I do!). (and this is why I get more than a little pissed about folks that might say I have a "Gull Lake" lifestyle.)
Sometimes folks just don't know....what they don't know. I hope someday.....that you too can donate your IRA savings to the betterment of your fellow man. And, I hope to not berate you for your the ability to do so. I rest my case.

Very noble Foggy, and impressive. Most of us have a greed that requires keeping what we earned... even if we don't use it. Good on you!

Agree with your feelings and at some time and in some fashion we will be doing similar philanthropic activities. I also have the same feelings on government, I know we need a government but currently I see much of our government as unethical and immoral. I truly don't want to have anything to do with it. Many people think those who have some wealth obtained it quick and easy like Joe Montana throwing a touchdown. Not me, I'm more like Bill Brown, 3.4 yards and a cloud of dust. After 35 years of working 50+ hour weeks I'm unapologetic.

I had one winter when I wrote down the hours that I was away from home and at work. The least amount of hours was 92 hours in a week. The most was over 120 hours. This is not hours on call but hours driving to farms and working on the farms. The following summer is when I left that job.
That is short of sleep and fighting falling asleep while driving.

Pretty sure a bunch of locals put their Trump checks toward buying new atvs/utvs. The number of shiny, new units going back and forth on our dirt road has increased exponentially. Either that or a bunch of citiots have "moved" up here thanks to the pandemic
