Resident snapper I had a big snapper like that slide up by me while fishing a few days ago. Tried to take a pic but was to slow. Ancient and prehistoric looking things. Supposed to be hard on fish...

Snagged one of those one time bass fishing from a float tube. I was flipping a creature bait in the crevices of a tree that'd blown into the water and hooked something huge. It pulled and pulled and ended up wrapped around a limb. I thought it was a fish. I worked my way into the limbs of the tree and used my free hand to follow the line to the fish. I was going to try and lip it, just assuming it was a bass. If I couldn't lip it I'd just figure something out....
I'm leaning over shoulder deep about flip the tube when I see the white inside of a turtle mouth gaping toward my hand. It was close. I almost lost a finger or two. So, I just cut the line and kicked away thankful to have all my fingers.
Edit - These are amazing animals I love to see. I read they can live over 100 years.

When I was a kid, I used to walk around at daylight during egg laying time and catch them and sell them. At that time the turtle catchers had traps on all of the local lakes. The trappers were always from St Joseph, Mn. True or not, he’ll if I know.
We didn’t realize how much we were hurting the population.
Catholics could eat turtle during Friday’s in Lent since someone decided it was a fish.

SD's mud minnow trapping adventure has got my wheels turning that maybe my 1/2 acre beaver pond by my cabin might be able to hold fish after all. If a fish can survive the winter in SD's pool then in theory they should be able to survive a pond that is deep enough for a beaver to survive the winter. Right?
My beaver pond is fed by a trickle of water that flows for half of the year, but I have seen some kind of minnow like fish in that trickle of water years before. Now that the beavers dammed it up I'm pretty sure that the pond is over 6' deep in the center, possibly a little more.
I really just want this pond as a spot to hunt ducks close to the cabin, but would there be any downside to throwing in a few catfish or perch in the pond to see what happens? I bought a fish trap like SD had, so I should be able to find out if there is currrently any life in the pond. Even if game fish couldn't survive, it would be nice to have a source for some free minnows when we are at my cabin fishing nearby lakes.

I would bet you have a damn good minnoe pond already. If u got more than 4' of water, sky is the limit. Generally waterfall and fish dont coexist very well. Are u roosting birds there?

Looking for ideas or suggestions...
I have this little pond that is full of very stunted bass (6 inchers, can catch one on every cast) and very large green sunfish. Thinking of putting a handful of black crappie in it or a couple of 5lb largmouths. Would the big bass prey on the little bass and get bigger? Would the crappie outcompete the little bass for forage and get bigger? Would anything likely change at all? Ideas?

Can you catch and fillet every stunted bass you can catch and see if you can thin the bass herd enough to grow a whopper or two?

I would bet you have a damn good minnoe pond already. If u got more than 4' of water, sky is the limit. Generally waterfall and fish dont coexist very well. Are u roosting birds there? I followed SD's lead and today ordered the same kind of crayfish trap he used to detect fish life in his pond. I know there are a ton of frogs, toads and some chunky snapping turtles using the beaver pond, but it will be cool to see if there are any fish. The beavers just built the dam last spring, so it is all new and I have never seen fish in beaver pond yet. There are ducks roosting there now, but not quite as many or as often as I expected. Last fall everything was wet though and water was everywhere, so the ducks had a ton of water options. I think the beaver dam will be a bigger duck draw during the dry years when the smaller seasonal ponds are dried up. That's just a wild guess though, so I could be way off. I've also heard that a pond is usually either good for ducks or fish, but typically not both so I thought I would see what you guys know. What do you use to trap minnows that you feed to your game fish? I'm assuming it's not the $10 crayfish trap from Amazon?

Every fish caught went on the bank. Didn't catch a thing for a couple of years after that. I really figured a few survivors would get a jump on things and outgrow the rest at that point. Nope, went right back to a million stunted little bass.
