3/3 lately, after switching to new trap without the bent wires like the old one. Setting the trap and packing dirt around it seems to be the key for fall trapping. I need to buy one of these. What do you think caused the wires to bend?

What do you think caused the wires to bend? I pulled it out of the ground with a gopher in it and it pulled hard. It is best to remove a shovel full of dirt from besides the trap if you feel resistance when pulling it. Resistance =success.

Caught five/5 with the new trap. Packing dirt around it seems to help.

I've caught three in the last three days with gopher hawks. I bought a couple more this spring. I actually read the stuff that came with the traps this time, there's info about how to "tune" the traps after they've been used a few times. Really wish I would have been smart enough to read that before.

I have missed the last two gophers, so I must need to do something. Now I have to find the literature.

Thankfully we don’t have gophers here yet. I did see a mole or vole when I was mowing the lawn this morning. He had a head start and almost made it to the tree line but, came up 2’ short before the JD caught him.

Basically, you unscrew the spring to relieve the tension, reshape the snares, and then re-tighten the spring.

That is what I did and I cleaned the sand out of it.

I would say that the Gopher Hawk has been my best move in 60 years for controlling gophers. I get about 6/7 gophers on the first setting. Several suggestions. 1. Always remove a shovel dirt while pulling a sprung trap. A gopher caught only by the foot like this one might pull out otherwise. I have also bent the wires on a trap by pulling it out without removing a shovel full of dirt. 2. When you start missing gophers, rinse the sand and dirt out of the trap. Maybe spray with just a bit of WD 40 and then let it air out well. I have also taken the trap apart .

If it's small like a mouse it's a vole, but if it's bigger I'd say it's a mole. Looks like a mole.
