MN DNR would tell you that trilliums are an indicator species. If you have them, there aren't that many deer When trilliums exist and/or dominate spring landscapes, it pisses off wildlife managers who are trying to push the "too many deer" prerogative

There aren't nearly as many as there were the first spring I owned the place. I thought it had more to do with the canopy growing shut. Didn't realize it had something to do with deer numbers.

Trilliums don't want full sun or full shade. I had trilliums here when I bought the place. Now I don't. Here, it has nothing to do with deer numbers. I opened the canopy where trilliums used to grow and now there's "too much" sun. They may return when conditions change, I'm not sure.

I've got garage cleaning on my mind today. This thread got to reminding me I've still got some sweet clover seed here. I'm gonna load that up and blend with some flax and go blow it into my cut open spots. I don't know if this is the right time for sweet clover seeding, but I'm need to get rid of it.

Hawkweeds are interesting (to me anyway). They show up on disturbed soil and appear to take over...then after a couple years they largely just disappear.

I've never seen a white trillium here in NH. We have a red/maroon colored variety.
