Today I collected 85 gallons testing 3%. I usually pull a sample from a random tree. Today's was 22" dbh, tested just shy of 4% & dropped 7 gallons since the 24th. I wish they would all give and test like this one.

It’s going to be a tough year for most people here in the northeast too. Most are shutting down this next week. The warmup came and had very few days below freezing. Sone are 10% of a normal year. Buy your syrup now if you want to save a few bucks.

im about 44 hours into my first boil of the year and I can see the finish line. I've boiled about 60 gallons so far with another 12 or so to go.

my weekend total ended up being 2 3/4 gallons of syrup. It was less than normal, but still pretty decent. The sap should run the next couple days, but that might be about it.

I have a total of 9 taps out in the 6 silver maple trees in my yard. This year's batch was a little darker than last year's batch. I prefer the darker syrup since it seems to have a little stronger flavor, but they are all good.

Ben how many gallons to you figure you boiled down? Have you ever tested the sugar content of the sap? Have you always boiled it down outside. I know a few guys who made the mistake of trying it in the house.

Last weekend I boiled about 70 gallons of sap to get the 2.75 gallons of finished syrup. I've never tested the sugar content, but based on the sap to syrup ratio it seems to usually end up around 4% or so. Sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less. Based on what I've read I think I just got really lucky and the silver maples in my hard have a higher than normal sugar content.
I always boil it all down outside and then once it hits around 218 degrees I take it inside and finish it on the stove. It is easier to creep up to the final temps on the stove than with my crude outdoor wood burning setup.

I saw a guy on Craigslist selling Maple water. The guy is selling a 16 ounce Jar for $3.25, or a food grade 5 gallon bucket for $30.
I've tasted the raw sap before and it doesn't taste too good to me. Maybe I'll have to give it another try tonight to see what I'm missing.

I saw a guy on Craigslist selling Maple water. The guy is selling a 16 ounce Jar for $3.25, or a food grade 5 gallon bucket for $30. I've tasted the raw sap before and it doesn't taste too good to me. Maybe I'll have to give it another try tonight to see what I'm missing. I've tasted fresh from the tree and it's not my thing. If he's getting 30 buck for a 5 gallon bucket he making out like a bandit.

If he's getting 30 buck for a 5 gallon bucket he making out like a bandit. I bet it's been pushed through an RO filter. Dude in Duluth that was a mega producer had such a system to get it 13% sugar before he started the cook. He wouldn't let me drink the RO water. Jerk.
